People in the United States honor their parents with two special days: Mothers Day, on the second Sunday in May, and Fathers Day, on the third Sunday in June.

Mothers Day was proclaimed a day for national observance by President Woodrow Wilson in 1915. Ann Jarvis from Grafton, West Virginia, had started the idea to have a day to honor mothers. She was the one who chose the second Sunday in May and also began the custom of wearing a carnation.

In 1909, Mrs. Dodd from Spokane, Washington, thought of the idea of a day to honor fathers. She wanted to honor her own father, William Smart. After her mother died, he had the responsibility of raising a family of five sons and a daughter. In 1910, the first Fathers Day was observed in Spokane. Senator Margaret Chase Smith helped to established Fathers Day as a national commemorative day, in 1972.

These days are set aside to show love and respect for parents. They raise their children and educate them to be responsible citizens. They give love and care.

These two special days are celebrated in many different ways. On Mothers Day people wear carnations. A red one symbolizes a living mother. A white one shows that the mother is dead. Many people attend religious services to honor parents. It is also a day when people whose parents are dead visit the cemetery. On these days families get together at home, as well as in restaurants. They often have outdoor barbecues for Fathers Day. These are days of fun and good feelings and memories.

Since the beginning of time, man has been interested in the moon. The Romans designed a special day to show admiration and respect to the moon. They called it “Moonday”, or “Monday”, as we know it today. Later, the great mind of Leonardo da Vinci studied the moon and designed a machine to carry a human to the moon. Leonardo said that one day a great machine bird would take a person to the moon and bring great honour to the home where it was born.

Four and a half centuries later, Leonardos idea was realized. Apollo II took three Americans Collins, Aldrin, and Armstrong to the moon. The mission（任务） did fill the whole world with great surprise, as Leonardo had said it would. Numerous essays, articles, and books were written about mans first moon mission. But perhaps the most interesting story was one written before the event over 100 years before.

In 1865, French author Jules Verne wrote a story about the first journey to the moon. His story was very similar to the 1969 Apollo II mission.

Vernes spacecraft also contained three men—two Americans and a Frenchman. The spacecraft was described as being almost the same size as Apollo II. The launch（发射） site in Vernes story was also in Florida. The spacecraft in Vernes story was named the “Columbiad”. The Apollo II command ship was called “Columbia”. His account of sending the spacecraft into the space could easily have been written about how Apollo II was sent into the space.

Vernes story was the same as the actual event in several other respects. The speed of Vernes spacecraft was 36, 000 feet per second; Apollos was 35, 533 feet per second. Vernes spacecraft took 97 hours to reach the moon; Apollos time was 103 hours. Like Apollos spacemen, Vernes spacemen took pictures of the moons surface, relaxed on their seats, cooked with gas, and experienced weightlessness. They too came down in the Pacific and were picked up by an American warship.

What were the reasons for Jules Vernes extreme accuracy in describing an event 100 years or more before it actually occurred? He based his writings on the laws of physics and astronomy（天文学）. Nineteenth-century science and the vivid Vernes imagination gave people an unbelievably accurate preview of one of the greatest events of the 20 the century.

British potato farmers were taking to the streets to call for the expression “couch potato” to be struck from the dictionary on the grounds that it harms the vegetables image. The British Potato Council wants the Oxford English Dictionary (OED) to replace the expression with the term “couch slouch”, with protests planned outside parliament in London and the offices of Oxford University Press.

Kathryn Race, head of marketing at the Council, which represents some 4,000 growers, said the group had complained in writing to the OED but had yet to receive a response. “We are trying to get rid of the image that potatoes are bad for you,” she said on Monday, “The potato has had its knocks in the past. Of course it is not the Oxford English Dictionarys fault but we want to use another term than couch potato because potatoes are naturally healthy.”

The OED says “couch potato” originated as American slang, meaning “a person who spends leisure time passively or idly sitting around, especially watching television or video tapes.”

The Potato Council says its campaign has the backing of dieticians(营养学家) who say the vegetable is low in fat and high in vitamin C.

Supporting the campaign, famous chef(厨师) Antony Worrall Thompson said, “Not only are they healthy, they are convenient and taste great too. Life without potato is like a sandwich without a filling. it was one of Britains favorite foods.”

John Simpson, chief editor of the Oxford English Dictionary, said the dictionary first included the term couch potato in 1993 and said “dictionaries just reflect the words that society uses.”

Simpson said words were never taken out of the full-length dictionary, which includes some 650,000 words contained in 20 volumes. The first known recorded use of the expression couch potato was in a 1979 Los Angeles Times article. Nigel Evans, a member of parliament, has made a motion in support of the campaign, highlighting the nutritional value of the British potato.
