1. amazevt. 使……大为惊奇,使……惊愕。如:

Dave amazed his friends by leaving a well-paid job to travel around the world.戴夫离开了待遇优厚的工作去周游世界,令朋友们非常吃惊。

amazed adj. 感到惊奇/惊讶。常用于be amazed that…, be amazed at, be amazed to see / hear / find…等结构。如:

We were absolutely amazed at his rapid recovery.我们对他这么快就康复感到特别惊奇。

amazing adj. 好得惊人的;令人惊诧的,令人难以置信的。如:

Its amazing that no one else has applied for the job. 令人难以置信的是,竟然没有别人来申请这个职位。

amazement n [u]吃惊,惊奇。常用于in amazement,to everyones amazement等结构。如:

Nina looked at me with amazement. “I dont believe you,” she said.尼娜惊讶地看着我。“我不相信”,她说。

2. attituden. [c]& n.[u] 心态;感觉;态度;看法。后常跟介词to 或towards。如:

Peters attitude towards women really scares me.彼得对女性的看法真令人害怕。

His attitude to his new job seemed to be very negative. 他对他的新工作态度似乎很消极。

3. impress vt.

(1)令人称羡,使……留下深刻印象。常用于impress sb with/by sth结构。如:

One candidate in particular impressed us with her knowledge. 有一位候选人的学识尤其给我们留下了深刻的印象。

(2)使(某人)了解(某事物的)重要性。常用于impress sth on sb结构。如:

Father impressed on me the value of hard work.父亲向我强调了努力工作的重要性。

impressive adj. 给人深刻印象的。如:

Alan Howard has been impressive in “Henry IV” at the National Theatre.

在国家大剧院上演的《亨利四世》中,阿兰·霍华德的表演给人印象深刻。

impression n. [c](对人或事物的)印象。后面常跟介词of,还常用于first impression of, make an impression on sb, get / have the impression that…等结构中。如:

When it comes to job interviews, first impressions are important. 谈到面试,第一印象很重要。

4. disappoint vt. 使(某人)失望。常用于disappoint sb,disappoint sbs hopes / expectations / plans等结构中。如:

Im sorry to disappoint you, but there arent any tickets left.很抱歉让您失望了,票没了。

disappointed adj. 失望的,沮丧的。常用于 be disappointed in sb, be disappointed at/with/about sth, be disappointed to see / hear / find…, be disappointed that…等结构。如:

Dad seemed more disappointed than angry. 与其说爸爸生气,倒不如说他失望。

Visitors were disappointed to find the museum closed.看到博物馆已关门,参观者都很失望。

disappointing adj. 令人失望 / 沮丧 / 扫兴的。如:

It rained most of the time we were in England, which was pretty disappointing.我们在英国期间大部分时间在下雨,真是令人扫兴。

disappointment n. [c] 失望,沮丧。常用于to somebodys(great)disappointment,disappointmentat/with/over,disappointment that…等结构。n. [c] 令人失望的人或事物。常跟to / for sb。如:

He could see the disappointment in her eyes.他能看出她失望的眼神。

5. avoid vt.

(1)避免,防止(不好的事情发生)。常用于avoid (doing) something结构。如:

It is important to take measures to avoid the risk of fire.采取措施避免火灾危险很重要。

The book tells you how to avoid getting ill when travelling.这本书告诉你怎样在旅行期间防止生病。

(2)(故意)避开,回避(某人或某事物)。如:

John was embarrassed and tried to avoid us the next day.约翰很尴尬,第二天设法躲着我们。

(3)逃避。常用于avoid (doing) something结构。如:

There are ways of legally avoiding taxes. 有些合法避税的办法。

avoidable adj. 可以避免的。如:

Too many children are still injured in avoidable accidents.

仍有许多孩子在可以避免的事故中受伤。

6. cover vt.

(1)又作 cover up,遮盖,遮蔽(以隐藏或保护)。常用于cover sth with sth结构。如:

Dan covered his face with his hands.丹用手盖住脸。

The bulletin board was covered with messages. 布告牌上写满了信息。

(2)包括,涉及;处理。如:

Are there any areas you feel are not covered adequately in the book? 你觉得书中还有些领域没有充分论述吗?

(3)走完(一段路程);占(多少面积)。如:

They were hoping to cover 40 miles yesterday.他们本来希望昨天走四十英里。

The city covers 25 square miles. 这座城市面积是25平方英里。

(4)(新闻媒体)报道。如:

Ive just returned from covering the Cambodian war.我刚刚去采访缅甸战争回来。

(5)(钱)够支付(……的费用)。如:

The award should be enough to cover her tuition fees. 奖金应该够付她的学费了。

7. appreciate vt.

(1)感激。如:

I appreciate your concern, but honestly, Im fine. 感谢您的关心,但说实话,我真的没事。

(2)欣赏;赏识;鉴赏。如:

Her abilities are not fully appreciated by her employer. 她的才能没有完全得到老板的赏识。

8. admit (admitted, admitted, admitting) vt.

(1)(不情愿的)承认;赞同;承认(做错了事或犯了罪)。常用于admit (that…), admit to sb (that…), admit (to) doing something等结构。如:

You may not like her, but you have to admit that shes good at her job.你可以不喜欢她,但你不得不承认她工作干得很好。

A quarter of all workers admit to taking time off when they are not ill.四分之一的工人都承认没生病的时候请过假。

(2)vt. 允许……进入; 允许……加入,接纳。常用于admit sb to/into something结构。如:

Only ticket-holders will be admitted into the stadium.只有持票者才被允许进入体育场。

Mike was admitted into the club in 1997.麦克1997年被接纳加入俱乐部。

9. abandon vt.

(1)遗弃,抛弃(某人); 放弃(信念或原则)。如:

How could she abandon her own child? 她怎么会抛弃自己的孩子呢?

Rescuers had abandoned all hope of finding any more survivors.救援者不再期望找到更多幸存者。

(2)(因问题多或继续不下去而)放弃,中止(做某事)。如:

The game had to be abandoned due to bad weather. 比赛由于天气也因不得不中止。

[比较] desert vt.

(1)遗弃,抛弃,离弃(某人)(=abandon)。如:

He deserted his wife and family for another woman.为了另一个女人,他抛弃了妻子和家人。

(2)舍弃,离开(某地使之变空)(以后也许会再回来)。如:

The birds have deserted their nest. 鸟离开了巢。

10. frighten vt.

(1)使害怕,使惊吓。常用于frighten somebody to death,frighten the life out of somebody (=make someone feel extremely afraid) 等结构。如:

He drove at a speed which frightened Lara to death.他开车的速度把劳拉吓坏了。

(2)frighten somebody into / out of (doing) something恐吓某人做/不做某事。如:

He frightened me into staying silent. 他吓唬我,让我别出声。

frightened adj. 害怕的,受惊的。如:

I was frightened of being left by myself in the house.我害怕独自一人留在房子里。

frightening adj. 可怕的,吓人的。常用于it is frightening (to do something)结构。如:

Going into hospital can be very frightening for a child.对小孩子来说,去医院很可怕。
