Special Issue on‘Big Data and Precision Medicine’’

The journal Genomics Proteomics&Bioinformatics(GPB)is now inviting submissions for a special issue on the topic of‘Big Data and Precision Medicine’to be published in the fall of 2016.

For many complex diseases, the traditional‘one drug for one disease’scenario may soon become history. The new concept of‘precision medicine’will heavily rely on the collection of large amount of data from the population as well as patients of specific diseases. Thanks to the fast development of various omics technologies, including genomics, proteomics, and metabolomics,it has become increasingly feasible to gatherhigh-dimensional omics data from the same subjects. How to efficiently utilize the‘big data’has now evolved into one of the greatest challenges in next-generation biomedicine. The imminent problems include data storage, management, security, standard, accessibility, visualization, and integration strategies,to name a few.The ultimate goal is to develop genetic risk prediction models, novel biomarkers, and treatment strategies for cancer, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and neurological disorders.Big projects on genome sequencing initiated recently in several countries are expected to significantly boost the development and maturation of methodologies in this field.

We are pleased to announce a special issue on‘Big Data and Precision Medicine’in GPB,which is likely to provide a platform for quality papers focusing on the curation and integration of multi-omics data for human health.Drs.Xiangdong Fang and Hongxing Lei from Beijing Institute of Genomics,Chinese Academy of Sciences are Guest Editors of this issue. The topics may include(but not be limited to):

•Curation of various types of omics data relevant to human health

•Curation of various types of medicaldata

•Integration of omics and medical data

•Online visualization of integrated data

•Functional discoveries from big data

•Data curation and integration in chemical genomics

•Big data related to the interaction between human and environment

•Development of web servers for big data

•Development of cloud computing platforms for biomedicine

•Strategies for big data storage and management

•Data standard and ontologies

Special Issue on‘Biomarkers for Human Diseases and Translational Medicine’’

The journal Genomics,Proteomics&Bioinformatics(GPB)is now inviting submissions for a special issue(to be published in the fall of 2016)on the topic of‘Biomarkers for Human Diseases and Translational Medicine’.

In the personalized medicine era, disease biomarkers have potential application in diagnosis, prognosis, and guidance for treatment, and are important tools in translational medicine. Diagnosis upon biomarkers would aid in early and more efficient intervention, while prognostic biomarkers could lead to right decision of medical treatment. In addition, the biomarker responses to drug treatment are critical for stratifying patient population to fulfill precision medicine.Traditionally, detection to biomarkers is focused on DNA,RNA,protein or metabolites;moreover, recent advances in biology and medicine have suggested that new molecular types are emerging as biomarkers such as noncoding RNAs,epigenetic modifications, splice isoforms, abnormal proteins and autoantibodies.Furthermore,large-scale and high-throughput analysis technologies, such as genome sequencing and mass spectrometry, greatly promote the discovery and application of biomarkers in human diseases. These technologies provide an excellent opportunity to(1)develop new algorithms deal with the large datasets,(2)identify biomarkers of new data types as aforementioned,and(3)improve the accuracy and robustness in discovery and verification of biomarkers.

To highlight the recent cutting-edge studies and progress in this area,we are pleased to announce a special issue on‘Biomarkers for Human Diseases and Translational Medicine’’in GPB,which will publish a set of research articles and review papers focusing on biomarker discovery and applications for human diseases.Dr.William Cho from Queen Elizabeth Hospital,Hong Kong,Dr.Siqi Liu from Beijing Institute of Genomics,Chinese Academy of Sciences,Dr.Edwin Wang from the National Research Council Canada, and Dr.Cesar Wong from Hong Kong Polytechnic University are Guest Editors of this issue.

The topics may include(but not be limited to):

➢Discovery of disease biomarkers using next-generation sequencing

➢Biomarkers of new data types such as miRNA,lncRNA,epigenetic modifications, splice isoforms, etc

➢Discovery of disease biomarkers through evaluation of gene expression

➢Exploration and application of disease protein biomarkers using proteomic analysis

➢Alternation of metabolic pathways responding to disease

➢Integration of omics data for discovery of disease biomarkers

➢High-throughput platforms for biomarker discovery

➢Techniques for measurement of disease biomarkers in the clinical diagnosis

➢Algorithm development for biomarker discovery

Originalstudies, reviews, methods, application notes, etc.are all welcome. The portfolio will be open for incoming manuscripts till July 15,2016.Accepted submissions will be published free of charge.

Manuscripts should be submitted online at http://ees.elsevier.com/gpb/.Please indicate that the submission is for this special issue. The detailed Guide for Authors is available on this website as well, with manuscript template and EndNote Output style template provided.

Special Issue on‘RNA Epigenetics’’

We are very pleased to announce a special issue,to be published in April 2017,on‘RNA Epigenetics’in the journal Genomics,Proteomics&Bioinformatics(GPB).

RNAs are life’s essential molecules with diverse functions. The identification and functional studies of multiple types of non-coding RNAs have been a major focus of life science research during the past decade. Moreover, diversified chemical modifications as well as structural dynamics of RNAs have emerged as additional layers of gene regulatory complexity, which form new dimensions of the research on RNA epigenetics. These multiple layers of RNA epigenetics shape the transcriptomic and proteomic landscape of our cells, and in turn regulate a broad range of biological functions. To unravel the mysteries of‘RNA world’,we dedicate this special issue to the current advances of RNA epigenetics and beyond.

This special issue covers the following topics:

➢RNA omics and bioinformatics

➢RNA metabolism:synthesis, processing, modification, and degradation of RNA molecules

➢RNA and cell fate determination:function of RNA in animal development, reproduction, and stem cells

➢RNA and disease:function and diagnostic roles of RNA in diseases such as cancers, cardiovascular and neurologic diseases,as well as infectious diseases

➢RNA and plant biology:function of RNA in plant growth, development, and stress responses

➢Structural studies of RNA and RNA-protein complexes

➢Cutting-edge technologies in RNA research

Original studies, reviews, methods, and reports on tools, etc.are all welcome. The deadline of submissions to this special issue is October 31,2016.Accepted manuscripts to this special issue will be published free of charge.Manuscripts should be prepared according to the Guide for Authors of the journal website and submitted online at http://ees.elsevier.com/gpb/.Please indicate that your submission is for RNA Epigenetics special issue.
