LastDay与Yesterday

我在备课中发现，last day竟然不能表示“昨天”， 常挂在嘴边的last day不知如何使用，顿时觉得自己英语知识甚浅，钻研不够深入，英语基本常识性知识匮乏，需要加强基本功学习。

英语词汇中有last year， last summer， last month， last week， last night，它们分别表示“去年，去年夏天，上个月，上星期，昨晚”；而last day就不能表示“过去的一天”，即“昨天”。为什么？

经翻阅资料，查阅《牛津高阶英汉双解词典》（商务印书馆 牛津大学出版社 第7版），last 有4种词性，含义也各不相同。分别是：

①名词：最后来的人（或发生的事）；仅剩下的部分（或事项）；鞋楦（做鞋的模型）；

例句：A： Sorry Im late—am I the last？

对不起，我来晚了，我是最后到的人吗？

B： These are the last of our apples.

这是我们最后剩下的几个苹果。

②限定词：最后的；最近的，最终的；（强调）最不可能的；

例句：A： We caught the last bus home.

我们赶上了回家的末班公共汽车。

B： This last point is crucial.

刚讲的这一点是关键的。

C： He knew this was his last hope of winning.

他知道这是他获胜的最后机会。

D： The last thing she needed was more work.

他最不需要的就是更多的工作。

③动词：持续；持久；（在困境等中）坚持下去；足够维持（尤指某段时间）；

例句：A： How long does the play last？

那出戏要演多长时间？

B： He is making a big effort now， and I hope it lasts.

现在他正加紧努力，我希望他能坚持下去。

……

④副词：最后；最近；上一次；

例句：A： He came last in the race.

这次赛跑他得了最后一名。

……

那么，last day到底是什么意思？

WorldNet解释为：n. （New Testament） day of the Last Judgment when God will decree the fates of all men according to the good and evil of their earthly lives. 原来last day表示“上帝最后审判日（大写， 小写皆可）；最后审判日”，其同义词有：crack of doom，day of judgment，……

此种解释读者未必就能真正弄清楚last day. 英语语言学习过程中，为什么会出现这种语言现象 — 认为last day有表示“昨天”的意思？Year，summer、month、week、night、day同为表时间的名词，与此同时英语语言习惯表达中也有last year（去年）， last summer（去年夏天）， last month（上个月）， last week（上一周）， last night（昨晚），然而就是没有last day表示“昨天”的这一说法，类似词汇还有 last minute， 并不表示“前一分钟”而是表示“最后一分钟或紧要关头”，造成这种误解的原因主要是学习英语的思维模式受到汉语或其它方面的影响，没有注意到英语的独特之处。而yesterday 有2种词性，含义不同。分别是：

①名词：昨天（the day before today）；往昔（the recent past）；旧时或过去（the past， especially a time when attitudes and ideas were different）

例句：A： What happened at yesterdays meeting？

昨天的会上发生了什么事？

B： Yesterdays students are todays employees.

昨天还是学生，今天成了雇员。

C： All her yesterdays had vanished without a trace.

她的过去已经完全烟消云散了。

②副词：在昨天（on the day before today）

例句：A： He arrived only yesterday.

他昨天刚到。

B： I can remember our wedding as if it were yesterday.

我们的婚礼我记忆犹新，就像昨天一样。

通过英文对yesterday的4种解释：①the day before today ②the recent past ③the past， especially a time when attitudes and ideas were different ④on the day before today我们很清楚地看到其英文解释中并没有last day这一说法。所以以上五个例句中的yesterday均不能被last day替换，否则辞不达意，牛头不对马嘴，使人产生误解，进而曲解英语原来的本意。

语言的意义不仅来自词汇和语法本身，而且还依赖于一定的语言环境。因此，在一定的语言环境下，正确理解last day和 yesterday的用法，重新认识语言的形式与意义，从而有助于我们的英语语言教学。
