Whoopi Goldberg was born as Caryn Johnson in New York City. Drawn to the theater from earliest childhood, she made her performing debut (首演) at eight with the Helena Rubinstein Childrens Theater at the Hudson Guild. In school, Whoopi was always made fun of by her classmates because of her strong features, her shyness and her love for musicals. She finally decided to quit school. After dropping out of high school at 14, she lied about her age to find work as a summer camp guide, and sing in the choruses (合唱队) of the Broadway shows Hair, Jesus Christ Superstar and Pippin.

In 1974, she moved to California. It was at this time that Caryn Johnson adopted her special stage name—Whoopi Goldberg—and began to develop the character monologues (独白) that were to make her famous. Soon she was touring the US and Europe with her one-woman production, The Spook Show. In 1983, in the New Yorks Dance Theater Workshop, she performed a revised version of her solo act titled simply “Whoopi Goldberg”, which brought her to the attention of Steven Spielberg, who chose her to play the leading role in his film of Alice Walkers novel, The Color Purple. Making her film debut in the role immediately established Goldberg as one of Hollywoods leading dramatic actresses. Her powerful performance brought her a Golden Globe and her first Oscar nomination. Goldberg followed her success in The Color Purple with a successful comic vehicle, Jumping Jack Flash. But her next few comedies were box office disappointments.

In 1990, Goldberg began two seasons starring in the television comedy Baghdad Café. In the same year, Whoopis supporting role in Ghost won her an Academy Award. She is only the 2nd African-American actress to win an Academy Award. At the time of Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit, she was the highest paid actress in history.

21. What was the main reason that Whoopi Goldberg finally decided to quit school?

A. Her strong features. B. Her love for musicals.

C. Her being laughed at by others. D. Her being left behind in her studies.

22. We can infer from the passage that Goldberg is good at ____ .

A. comedies B. tragedies C. horrible plays D. romantic plays

23. Which film made Goldberg the highest paid actress in history?

A. Ghost. B. The Color Purple. C. Jumping Jack Flash. D. Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit.

24. What can we learn from the passage?

A. White actresses often played the leading roles.

B. Goldbergs acting career in Hollywood went smoothly.

C. Europeans liked The Spook Show more than Americans.

D. Goldberg was not old enough when she worked as a camp guide.

B

The future population will be older than today, and this in turn will change the arrangements of social demands. However, Mexico will still be far from the “aging societies” that will most likely get the upper hand over the industrialized countries. In less than 25 years, the country will have to add almost as much infrastructure (基础设施) as it has already built up to now, simply to maintain services and production at the current levels. This will be a big challenge, although a similar one was faced successfully in the recent past, when available fundamental service was doubled in nineteen years or so. It is no wonder that much has been said about the need to reduce or stop Mexicos population control which is taken for granted as both good and necessary. It has also gained supporters in the developing world, and Mexico is no exception. But the arguments about population are complicated, as the following discussion implies.

Even if Mexicos population reaches 125 million by the year 2020, its population density (密度) is still smaller than the 1995 population density of some 50 countries. By international standards Mexico will still not be overpopulated by the year 2020. If wealth is generated by people, the more individuals there are, the greater the wealth that could be potentially generated. Why should Mexico control its population at density levels below those of the richer countries if more population means the possibility of generating more wealth?

On the other hand, it is often pointed out that once sustainability (可持续性) limits are near or are reached, there are decreasing productivity gains (or, perhaps more correctly, increasing productive losses), and people become a cost rather than an asset (资产). If we think that there are sustainability limits and that we are close to reaching these limits at a world level, then the government should check population growth.

25. Which of the following is TRUE about Mexico according to Paragraph 1?

A. It has stepped into an aging society.

B. It is not necessary for Mexico to control its population.

C. It is not necessary for Mexico to develop its infrastructure.

D. Its population is younger than that of developed countries.

26. What can be inferred from the last two paragraphs?

A. It isnt necessary for Mexico to control its population growth.

B. Population is likely to grow at a slower pace than in the past.

C. The more people there are, the greater wealth people could generate.

D. Mexico should control its population growth because it belongs to the developing countries.

27. According to the passage, the population argument is focused on ____ .

A. whether the density of population in Mexico is large or small

B. whether Mexico should control its population growth or not

C. what the standard international sustainability limit is

D. whether more people have an asset or a cost

If you are human, you cant help but experience times when everything seems to be going wrong and you feel as if your life is completely out of control. It is during those “down times” that words of encouragement from family, friends, co-workers or even strangers can lighten your spirits. It is also during those times that destructive words can sink you deeper and deeper into depression.

For example, consider this story about a group of frogs who were traveling through the woods when two of them fell into a deep pit (深坑). All of the other frogs gathered around the pit. When they saw how deep the pit was, they told the two unfortunate frogs they would never get out.

The two frogs ignored (忽视) the comments and tried to jump out of the pit. The other frogs kept telling them to stop. Finally, one of the frogs took heed of what the other frogs were saying and simply gave up. He fell down and died. The other frog continued to jump as hard as he could. Once again the crowd of frogs shouted at him to stop the pain. The more they shouted, the harder he jumped and finally he made it to safety.

When he got out, the other frogs asked him why he continued to jump when they were all shouting at him to simply quit. The frog explained to them that he was a little bit deaf. He thought they were encouraging him all the time.

Every time you have a chance to say either something positive or negative to another human being, do choose the chance to say something positive! Dont let those opportunities get away from you. Your words have a large amount of power. Use them wisely. You really never know just how much they can mean to someone else.

33. Paragraph 1 tells us that words play an important part especially ____ .

A. when we stay with our family, friends and co-workers B. when we hear strangers say something to us

C. when we get through hard times in life D. when we make some big mistakes

34. The meaning of the underlined phrase “took heed of ” in Paragraph 3 is similar to “____”.

A. acted according to B. had some doubt

C. got used to D. held on to

35. What lesson should we learn from the passage?

A. Never give up until we win. B. Having a positive attitude is important in life.

C. We must believe in ourselves rather than others. D. We can use encouraging words to help others out.

We are all called upon to make a speech at some point in life, but most of us dont do a very good job. 36

So, you have to give a speech—and you are terrified. You get nervous, you forget what you want to say, you stumble (结结巴巴) over words, you talk too long, and you bore your audience. Later you think, “Thank goodness, its over. Im just not good at public speaking. I hope I never have to do that again.”

Cheer up! 37 Here are some simple steps to take the pain out of speech making. Ask yourself the purpose of your speech. What is the occasion? Why are you speaking? Then, gather as many facts as you can on your subject. Spend plenty of your time doing your research. Then spend plenty of your time organizing your material so that your speech is clear and easy to follow. Use as many examples as possible, and use pictures, charts, and graphs if they help you make your points more clearly. 38 Dont talk over their heads, and dont talk down to them. Treat your audience with respect. They will appreciate your thoughtfulness.

Just remember: Be prepared. Know your subject, your audience, and the occasion. Be brief. 39 And be yourself. Let your personality come through so that you make person-to-person contact with your audience.

If you follow these simple steps, you will see that you dont have to be afraid of public speaking. In fact, you may find the experience so enjoyable that you volunteer to make more speeches! Youre not convinced yet? 40

A. Never forget your audience.

B. It doesnt have to be that bad.

C. Give it a try and see what happens.
