In the late 1870 s, the American black literature field emerged a group of outstanding black woman writer, literary fame in the United States, promoted the American black women writers in American literary influence and popularity. Alice walker is one of the outstanding female writer. Read her masterpiece The Color Purple gains a lot.

Alice walker is a real feminist, the novel describes the Negro harsh living environment, black women affected by the idea of white and black male inequality, by the time of the social system, cannot get material freedom and spiritual independence. But they inner awakening, for the consciousness of equality, freedom to guide their resistance to oppression, craving for love and warmth, efforts to remove those challenges in economic, political, social, ideological, and other fields, to pursue their own happiness life. Alice walker novel, the power to pursuit of liberation infected me, caused the thought and the resonance of the soul.

Through reading and analysis of this novel, and combining the American black women suffering and the social status quo, I think the American black women to really win the freedom and equality, can through the following two ways.

1. Obtain economic source, the realization of economic freedom

Has stable economic income, we can live with dignity, and to think about the other development, so economic independence is indispensable in our lives. Women are no exception, black women want to obtain the real happiness. First of all, they must achieve economic independence. Example of Sophia is enough to prove the point, she is unfortunate, after her came out from the prison, looking for a job is very difficult, life was in trouble. But she was lucky, never thought of retreat, even if forced to become someone elses maid, she still clear objectives, brave to fight for her rights, and inequality forces fight to the end.

In the end, through her struggle and efforts to achieve the economic freedom and independence, she won the respect, including white and her husband. In Alice walkers novel, black women like Sophia and Celie, at that time of the background, there is no ability to make money .they were not seen as a person, not to mention the love and respect. Eventually, some black women make money by making clothes for others, to achieve economic independence. In get along with other white and black men, she knows that these people hold serious inequality concept, they are unreliable. All happiness is to rely on their hard work. And in a sense the happiness more lasting and true.

2. The pursuit of spiritual liberation, realize the cultural independence

“Although in the cultural conflict is not so sad like that in the economy, needs a sharp and persistence” (gilbert and Cuba, 1985, p. 2374).The root cause of the black women were not equal treatment, it is from the deep-rooted cultural concept of the unfair. White born superiority, Negroes are inferior. Those backward ideas hinder the freedom and liberation of black women .If thoughts cant be change, their behavior change is difficult to realize. Alice walkers novel The Color Purple in the description of black women did not dare to use normal English, communicate using dialect.is naked embodies that they are influenced by the culture of inequality.

The importance of faith also reflected the cultural independence. Nettie grew up in a patriarchal society, She gradually obeyed the teachings of the bible. Then something changed, she never see the god is always give her help, began to deny the existence of god, began to realized the importance of herself. Save her, only by herself. This is the power of heart, direct black women looking for bright and liberation. This is a part of cultural independence, no longer let their own awakening to lead his seeking liberation. Ultimately achieve freedom of worship.

Alice walker, with dozens of letter to Celie for interpretation of this inequality, with some details in life to let a person perception, this unique way of writing novel, let the reader feeling from the plain life.

The Color Purple is a great book, it tells us economic independence for black women to be free from the material, cultural independence for black women in their spiritual liberation, through our unremitting efforts and the power of the firm faith, to go from the spiritual and material, go to the real liberation, equality and freedom.
