endprint

The International Dimension of Hangzhou

By Wei Shuihua

In the past, Hangzhou was a city which first sat beside the West Lake and then surrounded the West Lake. As modernization has been going on for decades, the city is now embracing Qiantang River into its unstoppable urban sprawl, separated by a thin line of mountains from the lake area. The citys modernization is also going strong with its internationalization, as testified by the ongoing First Hangzhou Qiantang River International Cultural Festival.

The festival goes from June to November 2017. Many international friends have appeared at the festival. A few snapshots may help illustrate how the city is going international.

David Dumont is a teacher working at China-Germany School of China Academy of Art based in Hangzhou. In June 2017, he was one of the five persons engaged to be Qiantang River Cultural Ambassadors by the organizers of the festival. And he is the only foreigner of the five. As a matter of fact, David Dumont came to Hangzhou in 2017. Hangzhou gave him an amazing first impression upon his arrival after a car ride from Shanghais airport. The brand new city scene at Binjiang, a new urban district across Qiantang River, looked impressive in his eyes. He knew it didnt represent China, but it was his first impression of the city and he liked the city.

In his spare time, he loves to bike around. It is his way to familiarize himself with a city where he teaches dissemination of international brands. He says he now has had a general impression of the city, but the areas along the river are his favorite. “Regional brands and city can grow hand in hand. This is also a key subject we study at the school. I am personally very interested in the subject. Regional brands can be a departure point as for dissemination of the citys Qiantang River Culture,“ says David Dumont.

Tang Xilan is the Chinese name of a Russian girl whose name in English is not available to the translator. She is a third year student majoring in Chinese language at Zhejiang University of Technology. She read her poem titled at a poem reading event at the festival. The organizers of the festival received over 600 poems from 300 plus contributors over the world. The contribution focused on Qiantang River. The reading event was composed of three chapters. In the first part were ancient poems about the zigzagging river that empties into East China Sea. In the second part were modern poems about the river. In the third part were poems newly posed for the 21st century dimensions of the river. “It was my first participation in such a poem reading event. As a reader, I felt it was awesome. Reading to such an audience, I well expressed my sentiments. And as a listener, I well understood the expressions of other readers,” said Tang Xilan.

Long Walk, another major event at the festival held on July 1, attracted over 10,000 outdoor enthusiasts from over 20 countries. The participants started off in six groups. One group had over 600 international participants from Switzerland, Australia, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Indonesia, Morocco, Pakistan, Turkey, Russia, Republic of Korea, Malaysia, Yemen and Jordan.

Li Dawu, an Australian whose name in English isnt available, was one of the 600 international participants. He works at an outdoor sports wares and equipment business in Hangzhou. He is a regular participant of local outdoor activities. He and his friends chose the 25-km category to see the city. The distance covered the whole length of the river within the citys territory.

“Hangzhou is a city where life thrives. I can sense its growth,” commented Li Dawu. “Since working in the city, I feel stronger and my desire for workout grows stronger.”endprint
