I read a lot on Medium (a blogging platform) and came across the article A Teenager's View on Social Media. Although it provided some insight into our (teenagers) world, it was written by a 19-year-old, someone who to me is an adult. Here is social media from mine and my friends' eyes.

Instagram

Background Info: Instagram is a social networking platform that allows users to share photos and short videos. No one knows or will believe that Instagram is owned by Facebook!

My View: Instagram is HUGE in middle school. This may sound funny but for some people, who you follow and how many followers you have dictate1) school relationships. Although most people only have two or three pictures on Instagram, they go on Instagram every day just to check how many followers they gained. Not liking a picture your friends put up is the highest of insults. At the end of the day2) Instagram is like your passport in middle school.

Facebook!

Kik

Background Info: Kik is a free instant messaging platform that's very popular with teens and young adults. Users can chat with each other one-on-one or in groups by using Kik usernames (instead of phone numbers). In addition to text-based messages, users can also send photos, animated GIFs and videos to their friends.

My View: Most adults haven't even heard of Kik, but it's the most used social media platform by far. I've seen a lot of tech reporters talk about how teenagers use Snapchat, WhatsApp and a number of other messaging platforms, but most teens my age haven't even heard about those. Kik has a special feel to it. It feels like it was made for us, and us only.

endprint

Twitter

Background Info: Twitter is a microblogging3) platform where teens can share tweets, which are messages up to 140 characters in length. By default4), tweets are public, but users can set their messages to private only. Teens can follow their friends, favorite celebrities, or commercial companies.

My View: Twitter is seen as Instagram with no pictures. Barely anyone gets it and those that do think it's just for adults and that it's a copy of Instagram. However, there is usually a core group of kids at school who get and use Twitter religiously (I'm one of them).

YouTube

Background Info: Where does everyone go to watch or share video content online? It's obviously YouTube. YouTube is an online video sharing website. Users can share everything from homemade music videos to sporting event footage5).

My View: Most teens have a love-hate relationship with YouTube either they have a channel themselves and subscribe to another 30 channels or they don't use it at all. A lot of kids have a YouTube channel of their own with a few dozen videos. Each day they check their analytics6) to see if maybe they suddenly jumped from tens of views to millions. YouTube is also one of the most influential networks. YouTubers are like celebrities and many teens aspire to7) one day become one.

Background Info: Facebook is the top social network on the web. It's a thriving beast with about two billion monthly active users and more than one billion that log on daily.

My View: Facebook is seen as a way for old people to connect with other old people that they haven't seen for decades. To be completely honest, there is no use case for teens my age. The only time anyone used Facebook was when FarmVille was still a thing. Like I mentioned before no one knows Instagram is owned by Facebook (probably a good thing for Facebook).

endprint

Background Info: Making its debut8) in the early summer of 2011, Google+ became the fastest growing social network the web has ever seen. It has a whole lot of cool features backed into it, like photo editing and Hangouts9), Google's video and text chat service for individual or group chats.

My View: Now Google+ is in an interesting situation. Everyone has an account because they use other Google products, but most people hate Google+. Meanwhile, there is a hardcore10) group of users who live on Google+, they check it every day and share everything that's happened to them. They have a very tight community between each other and also stand by each other in common arguments of which social media site is the best.

Background Info: Snapchat is an extremely popular private messaging platform for photos and short videos, which are automatically deleted after they've been viewed for a few seconds.

My View: Snapchat is seen as a cool app, but most people can't find a use case for it. Many people get it just to see what it is, and many feel like it could be a very useful app, but at the end of the day if none of your friends use the BEST social app, there is no point to use it. Snapchat's demographic11) is the 15~25 year old range, so I think that's when teens start to use it.

Background Info: Vine is a video sharing platform that limits users to six second videos. Often, a series of pictures are used to create a short video. Users can scroll through their friends' vines to view their latest clips.

My View: Vine is a fairly new social media platform, so not many people use it, which also means most people haven't made up their minds on whether they like it or not. Although very few people use it, most people have seen a Vine on Instagram, Twitter, Kik or a number of other ways people share vines. Currently, making a vine seems intimidating12), but I think as Vine becomes more popular we will see teens starting to post vines regularly.endprint

Background Info: Twitch is a platform for people to watch gamers play games live! Since launching in 2011, it has evolved its reputation as the world's leading social video platform and community for video game culture to now include an array of emerging content surfaced by its users.

My View: I would say 40% of teens who watch YouTube, watch gaming videos. Many gaming YouTubers also have Twitch channels so their subscriber's also watch their live streams. The majority of people who watch Twitch watch their favourite YouTubers streams and rarely comment.
