Family Foster Care

China has released a document on the assessment standards for family foster care of children, according to the Ministry of Civil Affairs.

The document stipulated certain standards for foster families and children and detailed assessment procedures, said Zhao Yong, Deputy Director of the ministrys child welfare department, at a press conference on May 27.

According to the document, the foster family environment should be favorable to the childs growth. Foster families that fail to perform their duties or abuse children will have their qualifi cations revoked.

The document outlined a childs age, and the physical and mental condition suitable for foster care, while stating that the childs opinion also needs to be taken into consideration.

Furthermore, the assessment of foster families and children should be conducted by qualifi ed third parties, including social organizations that specialize in child welfare, the document said.

Foster care, along with adoption, is a major way to address the needs of orphans. So far, a total of 6,991 children nationwide have been placed in foster care.

No Data Fraud

The National Bureau of Statistics(NBS) named and shamed local areas involved in statistical fraud, pledging a continued hardline stance on and zero tolerance for such illegal practices.

On May 28 it disclosed two typical cases in southwest Chinas Yunnan Province where local off ciials were found to have falsif eid business operation f giures to exaggerate regional industrial performance.

In Luxi and Jianshui counties, inspectors discovered off ciial interference in business statistical reports, which led to false data on local f xied asset investment.

The authenticity and accuracy of data is the core requirement for the economic census, said the NBS in a statement, adding that it will transfer the cases to related authorities and put forward suggestions on punishment.

The move marked strengthened efforts by the Central Government to crack down on local statistical fraud, as the country puts more emphasis on the authenticity of data.

Chinas central authorities have introduced a new regulation to prevent statistical fraud, with the NBS responsible for conducting inspections and pushing for rectifi cation.
