Students in a college French class have helped fill the empty bookshelves of a very poor Haitian (海地的) school by writing 90 books. Although many children in Haiti speak Creole (克里奧尔语) at home, French is taught in classrooms and used by the government, and students are asked to know the language in order to get further education. Therefore, the class hoped to provide resources to help the young students learn French well.

The project, called Little French Books, was headed up by Jennifer Shotwell, a French professor at Randolph-Macon College in Ashland, Virginia. Shotwell had visited Haiti with a group of students in 2013 to support a Haitian student and give books to a new library. Following the trip, Shotwell brought the experience back to her classroom.

“My students have a chance to use the French language in a special way by writing childrens books,” Shotwell said. “Though some learners dont think they can produce much with a new language, my students are learning to express themselves and create entertaining stories that we finally share with disadvantaged children who are also learning French.”

Shotwell had sent French books to Haitian schools, but they were printed on cheap paper that could be easily broken. So she started a Kickstarter, which collected more than $1,000 to make books with durable covers.

The books, which included stories about princesses, dinosaurs and exciting experiences, were given to the St. Gabriels school in Lascahobas.

“Each time a child gets into a new book, he will no doubt get new knowledge and new understanding. The Little French Books means a lot to our students,” said Gardy Myrtil, a teacher at the school.

28. Why do the students create books for children in Haiti?

A. To help the children learn French.

B. To follow the governments requirements.

C. To stop the children from speaking Creole.

29. What can we learn about the project of Little French Books?

C. It helps set up many new libraries in Haiti.

D. It provides textbooks as well as storybooks.

30. Which word can replace the underlined word “durable” in Paragraph 4?

A. Strong. B. Colorful. C. Beautiful. D. Thin.

31. What do Gardy Myrtils words suggest in the last paragraph?

Scientists have made great discoveries. But how have they influenced our personal lives? Do kids in your classroom even know when Einstein lived? You may be wondering: but why is it important to teach kids about modern-day scientists?

First, stories of scientists can encourage kids. Chris Hadfield is a Canadian who went to space, and hes a real, guitar-playing person. He makes singing videos on YouTube! His story can make kids think scientists are also common people. Hearing scientists stories makes kids think “I can do that too!”

But not only that, the stories of famous scientists can encourage kids to never give up. Bill Nye was always refused when trying to be an astronaut. But today, hes made a lot of successes in his role as a popular science educator and engineer. Besides, its no secret that scientific discoveries require trying, and trying again.

Its important to know that scientists dont need to be “gifted” or “good” at school. Often we consider a scientist as being an extremely smart kid at school. That doesnt have to be true. They just need to have a great interest in science. Telling students stories of scientists can encourage them to show interest in science. As long as theyre interested, they are likely to become a scientist in the future.

Modern scientists teach kids that knowledge builds upon the foundation (基礎) others have laid. This is important—no one can do it alone. Scientists stories can encourage todays young scientists to keep trying. Theyll be encouraged not to give up on the dream of making discoveries. Even if they havent made important discoveries, their research may help the following scientists.

32. What can Chris Hadfields story tell students?

A. Scientists are interested in different things.

B. Students should have a hobby of their own.

C. Scientists can be ordinary like people around us.

D. Students should consider scientists as their models.

33. Which of the following would the author agree with?

A. African-Americans are more likely to become scientists.

B. Scientists are not necessarily very smart at school.

C. Not all scientists really show interest in science.

D. Scientists are usually good at their schooling.

34. The last paragraph tells us that ________ .

A. scientists should help each other

B. a scientist should never give up trying

C. making discoveries is necessary for scientists

D. new scientific discoveries may be based on others findings

35. What is the text mainly about?

A. Why scientists are important to us.

B. Why scientists can encourage students.

C. Why students love stories of scientists.

D. Why students should be taught about scientists.

Friendship is an important human relationship with many benefits. It offers companionship (友谊), improves self-worth and promotes (促進) good health. There are times in our lives such as when we have recently moved into a new town, or changed our jobs or schools. Such changes often leave us without a friend.  But for many of us it is difficult and requires courage. Below are some helpful suggestions on how to make and keep friends.

Associate with others.

The first step is associating with other people. You can go to public places to meet new people.  Besides, you will need to make yourself known by becoming an active member of such places.

Start a conversation.

Starting a conversation is the second most important step in making new friends.  You can always start the conversation. Being able to make small talk is a very useful skill in relating with other people.

Choosing friends with common interests is important in building friendship as these interests would always bring you and your friend together. Hanging out will always be a pleasant experience.

Let it grow.

It is a good thing to stay in touch. However, try not to press your new friends with calls, messages or visits as this would likely wear him or her out and finally you may lose your friend.  The best friendships are the ones that grow naturally.

Enjoy your friendship.

A. Be cheerful.

B. Do things together.

C. Do not wait to be spoken to.

D. Try not to find fault with your friends.
