第二部分:閱读理解(35分)

In George Bernard Shaw's Pygmalion, the storyline centers around three main characters: Eliza Doolittle, Professor Henry Higgins, and Colonel Pickering.  Eliza Doolittle is a flower girl who is under the instruction of Professor Higgins and Colonel Pickering to learn proper grammar and phonetics. Eliza can be characterized as a very sensitive (敏感的) and emotional person. She seeks

to be treated like a duchess by men. Her personality clashes (冲突) with the personality of Professor Higgins in an extreme way. Professor Higgins is an arrogant (傲慢的), work-obsessed expert in

phonetics who views Eliza simply as an experiment. He is a bachelor who has never found a place for women in his life due to his obsession (痴迷) with language. Colonel Picketing is a gentleman

from India who is also an expert in language. He is gentler than Higgins and treats Eliza with respect while maintaining a professional interest in her. These three characters make up the main action of the play as Eliza learns speech of the upper class from them. She manages to pass herself off as a Hungarian princess at a formal party. This achievement makes Eliza give credence to the efforts of Higgins and Pickering. After experiencing life in the upper class, Eliza settles for a lower-class life with a man who loves her for who she is and wants to marry her. After some small and unimportant disputes, Eliza and Higgins remain friends later. Other memorable characters include Mrs. Higgins who maintains an authoritative (权威的) figure over her grown son and Mr. Doolittle who rises from a dustman to a respected speaker in the community.

I think that this is a good book because it shows that happiness can be achieved without wealth and fame. I highly recommend it due to its emphasis on grammatical and phonetic correctness.

1. Eliza learns speech of the upper class because              .

A. she wants to do an experiment B. she wants to marry a gentleman

C. she has to play a princess at a party D. she wants to be treated respectfully

3. What does the underlined part “give credence to” in Paragraph 1 mean?

A. believe      B. change          C. fancy  D. obtain

4. The passage is probably              .

A. a research paper B. a teaching plan    C. a book report  D. a diary

The career of Henrik Ibsen was directly influenced by his childhood. In later years, the great playwright remembered only a cruel, angry father, forced by business defeats to move the family to an old farm outside Skien, Norway. Ibsen's mother, no longer welcomed in the homes of her wealthy friends, started to suffer from depression. At sixteen, the young Ibsen left home, working as an apprentice (學徒) in Grimstad.

Failure, for Ibsen, became a way of life. Catalina, his first literary attempt, was impossible to sell. The privately printed book was eventually sold as packing paper to a grocer. Ibsen sought admission to the university in Oslo but failed the entrance examinations. He tried a career as a journalist, without success. As a stage manager, first in Bergen, then in Oslo, he did better, but lost the latter job when the theater closed down. The experience was not altogether wasted. At Bergen, Ibsen's agreement required him to provide one new play each year, and although none of the five he produced was well received, the requirement forced him to learn the techniques of his trade.

In 1864, Ibsen took his wife and baby son to Rome, Italy, where they spent five years living in poor conditions. On the edge of starvation, he wrote Brand, dealing with the subject he knew best: failure. Six months after he sent Brand to Danish publishers, his fortunes had changed completely. The play was brought out in March, 1866, becoming an immediate success. With Brand and Peer Gynt, written in the same period, Ibsen won recognition at last. Awarded an annual fixed payment and the title of national poet by Norway, he dropped his shabby clothes and became a well-dressed, neatly barbered, distinguished writer.

A “talking kitchen” teaches students how to cook French food and speak French. Researchers at New Castle University in the United Kingdom have developed the French Digital Kitchen. Professors Paul Seedhouse and Patrick Olivier led the project. Professor Seedhouse told us that it works like a satellite navigation (導航) system in a car.

The kitchen equipment and tools use motion sensor (动作传感器) technology. The sensors help a computer guide the students through instructions in French.

The system can tell whether you've done what you were asked to do or not. For example, the system tells you to take some butter and cut it with a knife. There's a sensor on the package containing the butter so it can tell where the butter's being moved. The sensor in the knife not only knows that the knife is moving, but it also knows what motion the knife is making. So it can know whether the knife is cutting or not. And it doesn't go on to the next step of the program unless you've done what it senses you've done.

Students can ask the computer to repeat the instructions or translate them into English. There are vocabulary lessons before and after the cooking.

Professor Seedhouse says the French Digital Kitchen turns the process of learning language into a real-life experience. “Here you're taking it out of the classroom and you're actually using the language to produce something which you can eat at the end of it. It's very enjoyable. ”

The system could be available for sale in the near future. Adding the technology to a new kitchen could add about ten to twenty percent to the building costs. The researchers have also been given money to develop programs in six other languages, including English, Italian and Spanish.

13. What is the “talking kitchen” developed by New Castle University mainly aimed at?

14. What does the third paragraph mainly tells us?

15. What does the underlined word “it” (in Para. 5) refer to?
