The Sixth Plenary Session of the 19th Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, convened from November 8 to 11, systematically reviewed major achievements and historical experiences of 100 years of Party endeavors. It is an important strategic decision and presents the CPCs confidence in remaining true to its original aspirations and firmly adhering to its founding mission.

The CPC is a Marxist governing party that attaches great importance to and excels at summarizing past happenings. At every critical historical juncture, what the CPC must do, is to reflect upon history and draw strength from its lessons to ensure the Partys continual progress. In 1945 and 1981, the CPC adopted two resolutions on its history respectively, and both went on to play an important role in advancing and leading the Partys development.

The resolution adopted during the sixth plenum is the CPCs third resolution. Like the previous two resolutions, it intends to help unite people across the country to have their efforts structured on a single-minded goal.

According to the resolution, the Party has guided the people through great endeavors and accumulated valuable savoir-faire over the past century. This combined experience covers the following 10 aspects: “upholding the Partys leadership, putting the people first, advancing theoretical innovation, staying independent, following the Chinese path, maintaining a global vision, breaking new ground, standing up for ourselves, promoting the united front, and remaining committed to selfreform.”

The Partys accomplishments have transformed the future of the Chinese people, carved out the right path for attaining national rejuvenation, and produced a profound influence on the course of world history. The Party has led the people in pioneering a uniquely Chinese road to modernization, creating a new model for human advancement and expanding the channels for developing countries to reach modernization.

The journey ahead sees China standing in between hard-won development opportunities and a series of grave and complicated challenges, requiring the CPC to draw on its historically ingrained competencies to enhance self-reform, preserve and improve its governance and leadership, and refine its ability to respond to the various challenges at hand.
