Do you know how the International Committee of the Red Cross got its start？Here is how it happened.

In 1859，during war time，a Swiss man named Henry Dunant passed a town in Italy where many victims had been wounded(受伤) or killed. Dunant thought they should be cared for. A Swiss organization used his idea in 1863.

When the organization became international，it was named the International Committee of the Red Cross.

The ICRCs emblem(标志) is a red cross on a white ground. People use it as a sign for army doctors. There are now ICRC offices in 60 countries around the world. 12，000 Red Cross workers are helping people in more than 80 countries. The Red Crosss visits to POWs(战犯) are to make sure they are treated fairly. The ICRC goes to dangerous places to protect victims of war. People sometimes also come to the ICRC for help.

The ICRC also has a branch in China——the China Red Cross Society (CRCS，中国红十字总会).

It started in 1904，and 2004 was the CRCSs one hundredth anniversary. Most of the people in the CRCS are either full-time workers or volunteers. Now the CRCS has 19 million members. The CRCS also has organizations in many schools. Student members learn how to respect the old and how to help the weak. They are also taught to give medical care to people in danger.

2008 is such a common number，but many Chinese will get excited when they mention it. How can a common number attract such a fascination？The answer is simple and obvious： the twenty-ninth Olympic Games will be held in Beijing in the year 2008. At that time，the whole world will focus their attentions on Beijing. As the hostess，Beijing will show her beauty to the guests from all over the world. The Beijing Olympic Games will be a green Olympic，a high technology Olympic，and a peoples Olympic. Among them，a green Olympic is the most important concept. It will show the world the determination，the ability，and the confidence(信心) of the Chinese people and their government to successfully hold a green Olympic.

As middle school students in Beijing，we should take on more responsibilities for our capital citys environment. Any actions we take will affect the appearance of the city. We can plant trees around our schools or in our neighborhood communities. If everybody does so，there will be a green Beijing and we will have a green Olympic. Many students parents drive them to school every day. So nowadays，the air is polluted with automobile exhausts(废气). What can we do about it？Ride on our bike to school and enjoy exercise! It will not only have significant benefits for our health，but also help improve our environment. In addition，if we dont drive cars，we will not go to the car wash. That will save large amount of water. If everybody does something，there will be a green Beijing and we will have a green Olympic.
