《战马》讲述了一个男孩与一匹马之间非同寻常的友谊，他们被分离的命运因为第一次世界大战又重新交织在一起。

1914年，在德文郡小镇，男孩艾尔伯特目睹了幼驹乔伊的诞生。在集市上，它被频繁叫价，最终被艾尔伯特的父亲泰德用30基尼的天价收入囊中，跛脚的他也因此得罪了地主。地主登门拜访，称如果乔伊不能犁地将立刻将其带走。于是，艾尔伯特在逼迫之下，为乔伊套上了鞍蹬，强迫它犁地，甚至还使用了皮鞭，最终灵性的乔伊真的领会了艾尔伯特的苦衷并将一片遍地石块的荒地翻耕了出来，第一次表现出出人意料的潜力。

战争开始，乔伊被卖给骑兵军，它更换了许多主人，遭遇了形形色色的人，见识了他们的人生起伏，悲欢离合，更看尽了人间冷暖与战争带来的苦痛创伤。而对乔伊难以忘怀的艾尔伯特，也参军来寻找它。尽管身处这凄凉的战壕，乔伊的勇气感动了它身边的士兵和人们，它能够寻找到温暖和希望。但是它的内心却惦记着它的小主人艾尔伯特，最终他们是否能够再次相逢呢？
