Basil: Hi, Mabel! How was your weekend?

Mabel: Pretty good, Basil. How about yours?

Basil: Well, Ive had better.

Mabel: Really? What happened?

Basil: On Saturday, my girlfriend dumped me out of the blue. Mabel: What? Thats terrible! Im sorry to hear that! Are you OK?

Basil: Yeah, I guess. I just wish I knew why she left me, though.

Mabel: I know what you mean. Sometimes, the mystery is the painful part.

Basil: I talked to Edward about it, and he said its probably because I didnt buy her enough flowers.

Mabel: ①She must really have a thing for flowers…

Basil: Maybe. But Hugo said its probably because I didnt call her often enough.

Mabel: Wait, you talked about this with Ed and Hugo?

Basil: Yeah. And Sarah said I probably didnt listen to her problems closely enough.

Mabel: Whoa, slow down. How many other coworkers have you told about this?

Basil: Well, theres Penny, and Lucas, and Scott…

Mabel: Basil, do you realize youve just shared some pretty personal issues with the whole office?

Basil: Not just the office. Scott is one of my clients.

Mabel: You told a client about your breakup? Are you 1)insane?

Basil: Well, he asked me how I was doing…

Mabel: ②Hold it, Basil. I think we need to have a talk about personal boundaries.

Basil: You think I shouldnt talk about it? But shouldnt we be friendly with our coworkers?

Mabel: Its good to have a good rapport with your coworkers, but it is impossible to share too much. You dont want your boss or your clients thinking about your failed love life problems every time they see you. You want them thinking about what a good job you do.

Basil: Well, I guess thats true.

Mabel: And not only that. Your clients might feel uncomfortable if you get too personal. When Scott asked how you were, it was probably just a 2)pleasantry. No need to go into detail.

Basil: Now that you mention it, my clients just say “fine” or“well” whenever I ask how theyre doing…

Mabel: Right. ③They keep a line between their personal and professional lives. ④You dont want problems from one bleeding into the other.

Basil: ⑤So, do you think Ive shot myself in the foot by sharing too much?

Mabel: Probably not. Just dont make it a habit. ⑥Remember, whoever you tell might 3)wag their tongue to somebody else later.

Basil: OK, then. I guess Ill be more careful in the future. Hey, maybe she broke up with me because I talk too much…

Mabel: Hey, I wouldnt worry about it. At least, not at work!
