I wanted to shout at him, “Youre not 5 yet!”

It is 6 sad that so many people cannot get beyond (摆脱) their pasts and live 7 the present. There are so many people like that talk show guest. There are people still in their teen years 8 that their lives are over. There are people in their twenties who already think they have 9 the boat to success and happiness. There are people in their thirties and forties who sit around complaining that life has passed them by. I want to shout to them all, “Wake up! Youre still 10 ! - Passage 2 -

One afternoon, I went to pick up my mother from work.I got there a little early, so I 1 my car by a small park, and 2 for her.

As I looked outside the car window, I saw a little boy, around two years old, running 3 on the grass as his mother 4 from a short distance. The boy had a big smile on his face as if he had just been 5 free from some sort of prison. The boy would then fall to the grass, 6

up, without looking back at his mother, run as 7 as he could, again, still with a smile on his face, as if nothing had happened.

At that moment, I thought to myself, “why arent most adults this way?” Most adults, when they fall down, make a big deal out of it and dont even 8 a second attempt. They would be so 9 that they would not try again if someone saw them fall. Or, because they fall, they would find a good 10 for themselves that theyre not fit for it. They would end up too afraid to attempt again for fear of failure.

However, with kids, when they fall down, they dont consider their falling down as a failure, instead, they treat it as a 11 experience. They try again and again until they 12 . The answer must be that they have not connected“falling down” with the word“failure”. As a 13 , they are not discouraged in any way .Besides, they 14 think to themselves that its quite okay to fall down and that its not wrong to do so. In other words ,they allow themselves to make 15 , so they remain energetic.

I was deeply impressed by the boys persistence (坚持不懈) and the manner in which he did.

- Passage 3 -

I have been driving cars since I reached the pedals (踏板). In Canada you 1 16 to get a drivers license. I 2 myself to be a very good driver.

I visited China 20 years ago. I with my wife was in Shanghai to give a paper at a conference. We 3 the number of bicycles on the roads and the few cars. In Canada almost each family has one car, but it was 4 that most Chinese depended on bicycles.

I 5 Shanghai and to other Chinese cities many times since then and have watched the fast changes on the roads. There are far fewer bicycles now but 6 cars. The roads are crowded, the government has been forced to limit the number of days some cars can 7 and the traffic jams are almost constant (经常的). So are the accidents. On a recent visit I saw four or five 8 within a two-week period.

To get a drivers license in Canada, you must drive, with an examiner, on real roads and in real traffic. However, in China you learn on a closed course, 9 real traffic, get a license and only then are able to drive under real roads.

Driving in Canada and driving in China 10 two different experiences. In Canada there are traffic jams but they arent so bad. We have more traffic lights; we obey them and drivers are usually 11 , allowing other cars to cut in front of them knowing it wont make much difference. In China, if you stop 12 another car cut in front of you will probably be there for a long time because once one car gets in, dozens of 13 will follow.

I would rather 14 the bus than drive my car in downtown Shanghai and Beijing. Because its 15 and stronger than most things that might run into it. ( )1. A. must be B. may be C. can be D. could be

- Passage 4 -

When I was small, my mum used to give the family something special for meals—she would make breakfast food for dinner.

I still remember one night my mum 1 some bread in front of my dad, something very burnt. I waited to see if anybody noticed. To my surprise, my dad just took his 2 , smiled at my mum and then turned to ask me how my day at school had been. Ive 3 what I told him that night. 4 I do remember watching him put some butter on that bread. He 5 as usual, every single bit.

After dinner, my mum said 6 to my dad for burning the bread. And I never forget what he said, “I 7 burnt bread, dear. It doesnt matter at all.” 8 , I went to kiss Dad good light. I asked him if he really liked his bread burnt. He held me in arms and 9 , “Your mum worked very hard all day. Shes really 10 . And you see—a bit of burnt food never hurt anyone!”

Now I know life is not perfect. 11 is perfect, either. As for me. 1 often forget birthdays or some other special days. But Ive learned something 12 over these years. What we really need is the understanding of each other, whether between a husband and wife, a parent and

13 or just between two friends. This is the key to a happy 14 .

So dont get angry if the bread gets burnt. Remember. 15 bread never hurt anyone. Be kind to those around you and a happier life will surely come closer to you.
