Mutual Understanding and Silk Road Spirits Arising from Painting Exchange

In year 2013 which marked the 5thanniversary of the launching of two projects by CAA, namely “World Journey of Chinese Fine Arts” and “Middle-aged and Young Chinese Artists and Scholars Overseas Research Scheme”, CAA held the first painting exhibition titled “World in the Eyes of Chinese Artists” at Yan Huang Art Museum (YHAM) in Beijing. On September 10, 2016, over 200 outstanding artworks from both home and abroad gathered at YHAM again to form a joint exhibition titled “Paint One Another, Know One Another -Sino -Foreign Fine Art Exhitation”, where those magic and magnificent scenes from more than 60 countries of “B&R” Initiatives were involved to present a colorful world in the eyes of artists from China and other countries. With CAA’s exchange projects as its main source, this exhibition collected most of the latest achievement in the international exchange and involved various disciplines of traditional Chinese painting, oil painting, print, sculpture, water color and synthesized materials. Divided into the following five parts, namely “World in the Eyes of Chinese Artists”, “China in the Eyes of Foreign Artists”,“Middle-Aged and Young Chinese Artists and Scholars Overseas Research Scheme”, Research Program of Lv Xiaguang Studio at the International Art City of Paris” and “VR Exhibition”, this exhibition had almost doubled the total of size the previous session. In the part “World in the Eyes of Chinese Artists”, all those works of exotic expressions created by Chinese artists who participated in the recent “World Journey of Chinese Fine Arts”were selected to focus on over 60 countries, especially those in the “B&R” strategy. In an open view for creation, with unique art language of Chinese cultural characteristics, those works depicted a different yet harmonious expression of the “B&R” countries, showcased the new perspective of Chinese fine arts into global participation , inheritance and reflection of “Silk Road” spirits, and demonstrated Chinese artists’ awareness of national strategy and their historic responsibility. As a professional act in accordance with the ove all national diplomatic strategy, this exhibition bore special significance and guidance for Chinese fine arts to comprehend and implement national cultural diplomacy in this new period and to promote creation and art language expansion on foreign themes following the prerequisite of holding fast to tradition.

As to the part “China in the Eyes of Foreign Artists”, thanks to the international exchange platform of Beijing International Art Biennale (BIAB), CAA welcome foreign artists deep into China for inspiration and invited them for art creation under the theme of Chinese stories. During this course, foreign artists came to feel about the wonderful connotation of “Chinese Dream” and integrated their understanding and expression into creation. Taking each other’s motherland as the object for mutual painting, artists both at home and abroad have achieved various styles totally different from their own national features, which highlighted the theme of this exhibition—the significance of deepening learning deepened through exchange and cross referencing.

Afterwards, CAA invited some artists from several “B&R”countries and regions such as Austria, Belarus, Estonia and India, along with Chinese artists headed by Liu Dawei, president of CAA, to visit Pinggu in the suburb of Beijing and Houhai in the city proper, where they depicted the simple yet charming scenes of human and nature in Beijing. As foreign artists put, they not only enjoyed the time-honored history and graceful landscape in Beijing in this trip, but also get in touch with the daily life ordinary Chinese people. Their simplicity, optimism and positive attitude added to the foreign artists’ good impression about China. By entering rural areas and getting contacts with ordinary citizens in China, foreign artists absorbed nutrition for their creation, while such “Deep into Life” trip of the artists both at home and abroad is the concrete fulfillment of grass-root experience. From this year on, CAA will organize such event at a convenient and proper time so as to invite artists from all over the world to paint a “Beautiful China”.

“World Journey of Chinese Fine Arts” Deep into Global Tour

“Art & Peace—the International Tour Exhibition of Contemporary Chinese Works of Art” is an international tour exhibition launched by CAA this year. By sending selected excellent Chinese artworks from the previous sessions of BIAB to an overseas tour, CAA intends to showcase the current outlook of contemporary art development in China while giving publicity to BIAB so as to strengthen art exchange and cooperation between China and the rest of the world. This exhibition had its virgin opening on October 14 at Hillerod City of Denmark—the “Kingdom of Fairy Tales”, which was the first time that CAA held exhibitions in Nordic countries.

This event received a great support from the Chinese Embassy in Denmark, Chinese Culture Center in Copenhagen and Frederiksborg Castle. For the first time in history, this National Historical Museum of Denmark offered the “golden exhibition line” in its core hall to Chinese artworks with high standard of accornmodation and free of charge. With a professional exhibition plan and meticulous design of details, the undertaking party brought every audience to feel its extreme emphasis and careful dedication. Under the theme of “Art and Peace”, nearly 40 Chinese artworks, by means of varied expressions of fine arts, reflected Chinese nation’s love of a harmonious life and carry for

the relationship between human and nature in an all-round way.

Group Photo of Researchers and Experts in the 2015 “Overseas Research Project for Young and Middle-aged Chinese Artists”

In the wake of its debut in Denmark, this exhibition transferred immediately to Brussels of Belgium, the cocation of EU Headquarters in a reputation of the “capital of Europe”. On the evening of December 6, at Chinese Culture Center in Brussels, it continued to tell European audiences about the “art and peace”in the eyes of Chinese artists. This exhibition not only presented the contemporary Chinese artists’ innovation and achievement in various mainstream disciplines of fine arts, but also demonstrated the international platform of BIAB set up by Chinese art circles, the discovery and training of art talents, and the promotion of art exchanges between China and foreign countries. The artworks of unique Chinese characteristics in this exhibition conveyed Chinese artists’ good will of cherished peace, tolerance and harmony, embodied China’s lofty ideal of constructing human community of interest and destiny, both of which were indeed a powerful counter-blow to the terrorism and would definitely win more support for its advocacy of peace.

The National Fine Artworks Exhibition is currently the comprehensive fine arts exhibition in the largest scale, with the most extensive participation scope, the most categories and the most significant influence and authority. By convention, some excellent works of the latest six sessions are selected and sent to all the mainstream galleries in Japan in a tour in the following year after each exhibition, funded by Japanese hosts. So far this tour exhibition has reached almost every major cities all over Japan. In July 2015, over 70 award-winning works were sent to Nara-ken, Yamanashi-ken and Nagasaki in a tour and on February 25, 2016, opened to the public at Japan-China Friendship Center in Tokyo, which proved the climax. Under the theme of “Hundred Flowers Contend for Beauty: Brilliance of Chinese Realism”, this exhibition involved many disciplines such as traditional Chinese painting, oil painting, print, sculpture, water color painting, lacquer painting, Spring Festival picture and comic cartoon, which highlighted the latest achievement and mainstream formation of Chinese fine arts in the recent five years, winning extensive attention and recognition from all walks of life in Japan. As Satsuki Eda, the supreme advisor of Japanese Democratic Party and president of Japan-China Friendship Center, expressed, though the subtle complication of Japan-China relationship made this event undergo many twists and turns, the success of this exhibition opened a smooth channel for bilateral exchange. Guo Yan, minister counselor of the Chinese Embassy in Japan, He Jiaying, vice president of CAA, and Tao Qin, deputy secretary general of CAA, respectively reflected on the elder generation of Japanese masters’ great expectations and support for art communications between China and Japan and concluded that the consecutive tours for over two decades had fostered a good number of loyal audiences who never missed any session. As a researcher in Art Gallery of Nara-ken told us, this exhibition had been to Nara-ken twice and the total number of audiences of this session was three times that of the previous session, which had set a new record. Thanks to this event, the local people there were still capable of reviewing and continuing their hearty love of Chinese culture for thousands of years. As this year marks the 45thanniversary of diplomatic relations establishment between China and Peru, on the occasion of APEC at Lima, capital of Peru, and the closing of China-Latin America Cultural Year, “Feel about China in Peru—APEC ‘Human and Nature’Art Exhibition”, sponsored by Information Office of State Council, in association with China International Publishing Group and CAA for academic support, was opened at National Archaeology Historical Museum of Peru on November 16. Among the 36 exhibits by 31 artists from 18 countries and regions of APEC, most were selected from the treasured works from APEC member countries in BIAB including Peru. It was the first time that some of those works returned home from China after their being collected by BIAB. In sharp insight and profound way of thinking, this exhibition aimed to explore the current situation of “human and nature” in the context of globalization, which not only showcased the varied distinct art traditions and cultural diversity of APEC member countries, but also carried on the perfect ideal of harmonious coexistence of “human and nature” in an affectionate feeling for all lives.

“Middle-Aged and Young Chinese Artists and Scholars Overseas Research Scheme” Deep into“B&R” Countries

Since its launch in 2009, the “Middle-aged and Young Chinese Artists and Scholars Overseas Research Scheme” has witnessed success in 8 sessions. At the beginning of this year, the 7thsession starting in 2015 came to a perfect conclusion. In retrospect, major themes of this session were of distinct avantgarde characteristics, and thus provided positive feedback and reflections on issues and challenges that confronted the current Chinese art development, which proved to be a great harvest.

As to the 8thsession of 2016, it was launched at the end of 2015 and underwent several necessary parts of authorized registration, public announcement, appeal collection, preliminary mass election. The new batch of researchers were officially selected and sent out to target countries in succession. Compared with the previous sessions, this session has its special points. First of all, all the candidates chose “B&R”countries as their destination while the previous research hardly reached those countries. In this sense, this session will undoubtedly help strengthen the weak part of domestic fine arts research and fill in the related blanks. In the meanwhile, such attention shift to those countries that enjoyed a time-honored history of communications will be significant in building up community of interest, destiny and responsibility in political trust, economic integration and cultural tolerance as well as implementing the cultural diplomacy in this new historical period. The outcome of the research in this session will be completed hopefully at the beginning of 2017.

“Public Welfare Fund of Chinese Fine Arts for International Exchange” Of fi cially Established to Facilitate Art Exchange

On June 13, the ceremony for the establishment and donation of “Public Welfare Fund of Chinese Fine Arts for International Exchange” was held at Beijing. Jointly initiated by CAA and Truseas Group, this fund gained its first donation from Truseas Group and get attached to Overseas Chinese Charity Foundation of China. By integrating social resources both at home and abroad, this fund will promote Chinese aesthetic spirits in the world, endeavor to build up international exhibition brand of Chinese exclusive property rights, global reputation and influence, support representative, pioneering and high-standard projects of international public welfare from various countries, such as exchange, exhibition, forum and research, and enhance professional exchange and cooperation of contemporary artists, especially among painters and sculptors of different countries. Upon establishment, this fund will subsidize such certain projects such as BIAB and“World Journey of Chinese Fine Arts”Preparations for building up the China International Contemporary Art Museum will be a major objective of middle-and-long term for the future planning.

CAA Continued Promotion Creation and Exchange among Taiwan and Overseas Chinese Artists

While Chinese fine arts keep going abroad, CAA still keeps an eye upon the individual artist development of Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan as well as overseas compatriots, and conveys the motherland’s solicitude, support and warmth to them.

On September 26, the 3rdFine Arts and Calligraphy Exhibition of Overseas Chinese in the World, jointly sponsored by All-China Federation of Returned Overseas Chinese and CAA, was opened at Overseas Chinese History Museum of China. Among over 4000 candidate works by over 1000 overseas Chinese artists from 45 countries and regions, 164 pieces were ultimately selected, with another 100-odd works as honorary pieces. Among fine artworks of varied sub-disciplines and calligraphy of different styles, we can find artistic reproduction of outlandish expressions, hearty portrait of overseas living, nostalgia of hometown scenery and longing for exotic landscape, and learn about the transmission, inheritance and innovation of Chinese fine arts and calligraphy in different countries.

On October 11, the 2ndCulture in China—Global Overseas Chinese Calligraphy and Painting Exhibition, jointly sponsored by Overseas Chinese Affairs Office of the State Council, Tianjin Municipal Government and CAA, was opened at Tianjin Art Museum with over 160 exhibits on display. Under the theme of “Flying Banners on Silk Road for Great Plan, and Overseas Chinese's Ink Art works for Chinese Dream”, this event aimed to unite and encourage overseas Chinese calligraphers and painters to tell “Chinese stories” in art language as well as to combine the joint efforts of overseas compatriots all over the world to realize and share the“Chinese Dream”.

Prior to the above art events, “Romance in Ink and Brush, Affection across the Straits—the 2ndCalligraphy and Painting Masters Exchange exhibition across the Straits”, jointly sponsored by Beijing Taiwanese Compatriots Friendship Association (BTCFA), Chinese Calligraphy Society of Taiwan and Taiwan Art Academy, and academically supported by CAA (for the 2ndtime), was opened at Taiwan Guild-Hall in Beijing on June 24. Nearly 60 selected calligraphy and paintings from masters of the Mainland and Taiwan were exhibited. Wang Landong, party secretary of BTCFA, on behalf of the sponsors, also received a special scroll of “Galaxy of Chinese Artistry” written by particularly for this event Hung Hsiu-chu, chair of Kuomintang.
