语篇型语法填空题对高中英语语法教学的启示与反拨

【摘 要】2014年普通高等学校招生全国统一考试英语卷新增语篇型语法填空题,着重在语篇层面考查考生的语法分析能力,强调语法知识在实际语言中的灵活运用。为此,笔者结合课例阐释了运用语篇情境教学法来进行语法教学,更能满足对于学生语言知识运用能力的培养。

一、问题的提出

2014年高考英语试卷结构进行新一轮调整,取消了已使用几十年之久的单句型语言知识题,新增语篇型语法填空题(分值15分)。语篇型语法填空题的形式为:在一篇200词左右的语篇(短文或对话)中留出10处空白,部分空白的后面给出单词的基本形式,要求考生根据上下文填写空白处所需的内容或所提供单词的正确形式,所填写词语不得多于3个单词。考生需灵活运用语法知识,如单词词性、动词时态、名词单复数、连接词、代词、冠词等,判断各空白处应填写的内容。

新增的语法填空题着重在语篇层面考查考生的语法分析能力,强调语法知识在实际语言中的灵活运用。其目的是考查考生理解语篇的能力、分析句子结构的能力以及熟练运用语法知识的能力。其“突出语篇,强调运用”的命题思路,不仅充分体现了语言测试的交际性原则,也很好地体现了高中英语课程改革的教学理念。将语法的考查提高到语篇层次,考查类型由选择型变为填写型,给高中英语教学提出更高的要求。它要求教师重新审视中学语法教学的目的,优化语法教学的方式,改变英语教学中存在的过分强调语法规则而忽视其语用功能,过分重视接受性技能的学习而忽视产出性语言技能培养的现象。加强学生听、说、读、写综合能力的发展,多给学生创造进行语言产出和交际的机会,将学生学习英语的关注点转移到语言的社会功能和实际运用上来。

笔者认为,为了增强考生应对此题型的能力,在教学中可以运用语篇情境教学法来激发学生的学习兴趣,提高学生的学习效率。

二、语篇情境教学法

语篇情境教学法,是在深入研究教学内容并确定教学目标的基础上,创设贴近学生生活的、能承载所学内容的语篇情境作为语法课的情境链,并把该语法项目中的各语法内核分解在该语篇情境的若干情境中,并实现循环输出的一种情境教学模式。

人教版这套教材的设计是在重视学生基础知识和基本技能的基础上,努力构建学生的语法知识体系。每个单元围绕一个主要话题开展聽说读写活动,共分九个部分。对于每个单元的目标语法,教材编写者在该单元的阅读文本中都有意识地、大量地呈现,并在Discovering useful structures部分呈现一定的情景阅读,让学生自己发现所学的的语法现象,然后帮助学生归纳语料中语法结构的形式与功能,强调在用中学,在学中用。现以高中阶段最重要的语法项目之一的定语从句为例。例如,必修一Units 4&5以及必修二Units 1&5的主要阅读语篇呈现的语法结构是定语从句。每一个语篇中都存在大量可用于学习、研究的语法知识,以这样的语篇作为语法学习的材料更符合语言学习的真实情景,而且语篇丰富的上下文内容也能够更有效地培养学生的语言知识运用能力。

现以必修二Unit 1的语法结构限制性定语从句和非限制性定语从句的基本功能为例,展示笔者在课堂教学实践中是如何运用语篇情境教学法这一教学模式。这堂语法课的教学目标是,要求学生通过学习,能够归纳限制性定语从句和非限制性定语从句的区别和用法并且正确使用该语法功能。活动过程介绍如下(有删改):

Step 1:向学生提供包含目标语法的语篇:首先让学生在课文中找出含有定语从句的句子,通过生动形象的背景材料,在语篇中感知所学语言。

The gift was the Amber Room, which was given this name because several tons of amber were used to make it.

The amber which was selected had a beautiful yellow-brown color like honey.

It was also a treasure decorated with gold and jewels, which took the countrys best artists about ten years to make.

However, the next King of Prussia, Frederick William I, to whom the Amber Room belonged, decided not to keep it.

Later, Catherine II had the Amber Room moved to a palace outside St Petersburg, where she spent her summers.

In 1770 the room was completed the way she wanted.

This was a time when the two countries were at war.

There is no doubt that the boxes were then put on a train for Konigsbergs, which was at that time a German city on the Baltic Sea.

In 2003 it was ready for the people of St Petersburg when they celebrated the 300th birthday of their city.endprint

[设计说明] 任何一个语篇都为语法运用提供了综合运用语言的语境以及大量的示例,以这样的语篇作为语法学习的材料更符合语言学习的真实情景,而且充分展示同一语法项目内分支项目间形式、意义和用法的区别。

Step 2:引导学生辨识并归纳语料中的目标语法项目:让学生两人或四人一组讨论判断哪些句子是限制性定语从句,哪些是非限制性定语从句,并说明原因、体会其用法。然后请几组学生说出讨论的结果。

[设计说明] 学生通过研究、对比、分析语法规律以及展示探究性学习的成果,不仅提高了语法学习中探究、收集处理信息的能力,而且加深对语法知识的理解并构建语法体系,获得亲自参与研究探索的积极体验,逐步形成乐于探究,努力求知的心理倾向。

Step 3:帮助学生整理目标语法知识:对学生的总结进行梳理,引导学生完成下面的表格,归纳出限制性定語从句和非限制性定语从句的区别:

[设计说明] 在教学过程中,不能过分强调语言的交际功能而忽视对语法规则的归纳和总结。教师适时对语法规则进行纲要式的归纳和总结,让学生领会语法意义,从而准确、得体地运用语法,这是必不可少的教学环节。

Step 4:让学生运用已学的目标语法知识进行交际:新课程理念倡导教师围绕情景话题与学生进行交流,在交流中适时再现语法知识,使学生在交流中体会语法点的交际功能。笔者首先播放《奔跑吧兄弟》的视频剪辑,然后以问答的方式与学生谈论这档2014年最火的综艺节目。

问题一:What do you know aboutRunning Man?

问题二:What time does the show broadcast?

问题三:How many entertainers join the show and what do they need to do to

finish the given tasks?

问题四:Who is your favorite? And why?

问题五:What impresses you a lot?

教师引导学生把讨论结果整合成含有限制性定语从句和非限制性定语从句的复合句,使学生在交际中进一步了解限制性定语从句和非限制性定语从句的区别和用法,达到正确使用该语法功能的目的。部分学生口语表达的例句如下:

问题一:Running Man, which is a joint production of Zhejing TV and Seoul

Broadcasting System, was a hit in 2014.

问题二:The show broadcasts on Friday every week.

问题三:Seven Chinese entertainers join the show, where they compete against each other in various tasks.

问题四:My favorite is the only girl in Running Man, whose name is Angelababy and who often tears up the other members name cards.

问题五:The team spirit is very important, which impresses me a lot.

[设计说明] 在开放式的语篇层面上进行练习,最终目的是培养学生把语法和所要表达的内容有机地结合起来,促使语法技能发展成为运用语法进行交流的能力,同时确保了语法运用的真实性。

Step 5:要求学生在规定时间内把上述的五个问题连句成篇,并通过投影仪在屏幕上呈现两位学生的语篇练习。以下是其中一个学生的习作:

Today I want to introduce to you a variety show -- Running Man, which is a joint production of Zhejing TV and Seoul Broadcasting System. The show broadcasts on Friday every week. Its very interesting and funny. Seven Chinese entertainers join the show, where they compete against each other in various tasks. Every week, some stars, who are from mainland, Hong Kong and Taiwan, will be invited to take part in the race. They have been to many places, where they record programs. My favorite is the only girl in Running Man, whose name is Angelababy and who often tears up the other members name cards.From the show, we can learn that the team spirit is very important, which impresses me a lot.At the same time we can relax ourselves when we feel tired.endprint

[设计说明] 在语法教学中穿插写作教学,扩展了输出途径,增强了学生的思维力度,还能够更有效地培养学生的语言知识运用能力。

Step 6: 把必修二Unit 1包含目標语法的语篇改写成语法填空题,要求学生根据课文内容完成以下练习。语篇如下:

Frederick William I, the King of Prussia, could never have imagined that his greatest gift to the Russian people would have such an 1 (amaze) history. This gift was the Amber Room, which was given this name because several tons of amber were used 2 (make) it. [设计说明] 进行适度的训练既可以让学生通过语篇复习本单元的语法项目,又能够通过练习达到培养学生精细阅读能力、关注语言准确性的目的,增强学生应对此题型的能力。

三、结束语

语篇为语法运用提供了综合运用语言的语境以及大量的示例,因此,教师既要关注单句层面的语法学习,而且要重视语篇层面的语法运用,把目标语法知识围绕一个话题融入语篇中,这对于学生体验和内化知识大有裨益。总之,教师在教学过程中要大胆探索更为有效的教学方法,加强对学生相应能力的培养,增强考生应对此新题型的能力,从而实现教考相互促进的良性循环。
