Li Kaiwen got up at 7∶30 am on time, quickly washed his face, brushed teeth and then had breakfast. He prepared yogurt and bread for his breakfast. After having breakfast,he walked ten minutes to Chongqing University. At 8∶30 he was already in his seat in the university's library and started to study for all day long.

Li Kaiwen's surname is not Li. In fact, he is a Turkish student at Chongqing University with a Turkish name called aYkUt. Because of the difficult pronunciation, he chose the English name Kevin, which was Kaiwen in Chinese, for himself after coming to Chongqing. Later on,his Chinese teacher gave him the surname Li.

He is about to graduate this summer. In order to finish his thesis and search for information more easily, he moved out of the house he rented in Guanyinqiao and rented a house near the university.

32-year-old Li Kaiwen looks older among other students. In fact, he has stayed in Chongqing for eight or nine years, working and studying here. "Chongqing has become my first hometown" he said.

Falling in Love with Chongqing’s Bustling City Life

Li Kaiwen's particular connections with Chongqing can be traced back to nine years ago. In 2011, because of his work in foreign trade, Li Kaiwen came to Chongqing.

"It seems that the day gets longer after I came to Chongqing. "He often stood alone on the street, observing the nightlife of Chongqing people. He found that in the Guanyinqiao, even at midnight, there were still people walking in the street or dancing in the square...

But at the same time, Li Kaiwen felt that the day got shorter in Chongqing. "Life in Chongqing is not boring. You can always find people in noisy hot pot restaurants or at street barbecue stalls. Yet in Turkey, this is insane." Li Kaiwen said,"Nobody can be found on the street around 10 pm in my hometown. ”

As he was drawn to the hustle and bustle of Chongqing, he wanted to know more about this city. Then he came up with an idea of studying in Chongqing and stay in this city. In the summer of 2015, Li returned to Turkey and announced his decision to his family∶ he was going to quit his job in foreign trade and study Chinese at Chongqing University in China.

His family was not surprised at his decision as his work priority was already in Chongqing in recent years. So in the autumn of that year, he went through the admission formalities of Chongqing University and became a student of the school of Chinese International Education of Chongqing University.

The “Chivalry” of Chongqing Dialect

When he first came to Chongqing, Li Kaiwen's life was not that smooth as he needed to adapt to a new lifestyle. One thing he needed to adapt to was the food.

He remembered the first time when he had the hot pot, it was so spicy that his tears kept rolling down his cheeks, so he had McDonald's and KFC food for four months. Yet as having snacks was not an ideal option,he started to try Chongqing dishes. Now, not only has he learned to eat spicy food, but also learned to cook authentic Chongqing dishes. He is now good at cooking the Spicy Chicken and Stir-fried Shredded Potato.

Occasionally, though, he came up with a "new recipe"∶ two Facing Heaven Peppers with cheese and bread, a mix that often becomes the norm at his table.

After spending nine years in Chongqing, Li Kaiwen came to realize that what drew him to this bustling city life was his love for its chivalry and characters of Chongqing people.

On one occasion, he heard two people talking in Chongqing dialect in Beijing, he felt very cordial. Li was so happy that he greeted them directly, saying that he was also from Chongqing.

Now, he can speak some simple Chongqing dialects. For example,"I know" and "OK".

Li Kaiwen knows an American called Li Heishuai, who can speak fluent Chongqing dialect while playing finger-guessing game. He wants to be like that person."In the noisy hot pot restaurant, ordering a few dishes of duck intestines and duck blood in chili sauce. After enjoying spicy hot food and beer, people with red face swagger towards home together with their arms around each other's shoulders. " Li Kaiwen continued,"People get along with each very well here. I like this straightforward way of making friends. ”

Fast-changing City

As he stayed longer in Chongqing, he noticed that changes are taking place quietly. Three years ago,the area around Danzishi in South Binhe Road was deserted. Today, it is convenient for both shopping and leisure. At the same time, he also witnessed the changes of Qianshimen bridge and Dongshuimen bridge from their construction to the opening.

"It is rare to see how a project with such huge scale can be finished in such a short period of time in my country. " Li Kaiwen said with a smile.

Jiujie Street is the place that Li Kaiwen often goes to and he still remembered the time when just arrived Jiujie Street a few years ago, "The street in the early morning is the world of night market, nearly 100 roadside stalls clustered around here, selling food and snacks. The 'late sleepers' from all parts of the main city came here to find food. But at the same time, some vendors in the street night market occupied other people's places to run their own business or polluting the urban environment.

Last year, the street began creating the garden night market. The Chongqing's Jiujie was spiced up with a dash of rows of red and yellow food trucks in the street. The nightlife of Chongqing has therefore become even more colorful. Meanwhile, you can find both Chinese and foreign cuisines here. For Likaiwen,Jiujie Street is no longer a street of wine, it is a street of night market culture.

So Li opened a Turkish restaurant on Jiujie Street with friends and hired a Turkish chef to cook the Turkish barbecue. Of course, this is his sideline. After graduating this year, he wants to be a teacher,"teaching foreigners Chinese and telling them about life in Chongqing. ”

Li Kaiwen thinks that Chongqing is becoming increasingly international. He remembered that when he first came to Chongqing, there was the only Turkish people, himself. Now there are 15. Next, he wants to find a girlfriend in Chongqing, get married and have children.
