Failures (失败) are necessary parts in our life. But all too often, many kids feel ashamed (羞愧的) of them. Donnie was my youngest third-grader who wanted to make everything perfect. His fear of failure kept him from classroom games. He seldom answered questions—he might be wrong. He seldom finished his work because he always checked with me to be sure he hadnt made a mistake. I tried my best to build his self-confidence(自信). But nothing changed until midterm, when Mary Anne, my student teacher, came to our class. She was young and pretty, and she loved children. My pupils all adored her. But the more Donnie loved Mary, the more he was afraid he might make a mistake. Then one morning, we were working on math problems. Donnie had copied the problems and filled in answers in the first row. Pleased with his progress, I left the children with Mary Anne. When I returned, Donnie was in tears. Hed missed the third problem. Mary went to the desk, and got a box filled with pencils.

“Look, Donnie,” she said, “Ive got something to show you.” She took out the pencils, one at a time, and placed them on his desk.

She kissed him and stood up. “Here,” she said, “Ill leave one of these pencils on your desk so you will remember that everybody makes mistakes, even teachers.” Donnie looked up with love in his eyes and a smile—the first smile Id seen on his face that year.
