“After the reform and opening-up, the proportion of Chinese companies in the worlds top 500 companies has increased year by year, reaching 129 in 2019, of which 13 were newly listed Chinese companies. However, there are two major problems. One is that Chinese companies have weak competitiveness although they occupy a large scale of the total, the other is that top manufacturing and high-tech companies only account for a small proportion,” said Sun Xitian, Chairman of China Council for the Promotion of International Trade Machinery Sub-Council, in a forum in September 2020. The economic transformation and upgrading strategy proposed by China, especially in the manufacturing industry,  is not only the needs of China, but also the needs of the community with a shared future for mankind.

Transformation and upgrading are challenges for all parts of China. And there are high hopes for the traditional industrial city Liuzhou, Guangxi. Therefore, holding the institutionalized China-ASEAN Industrial Design & Innovation Forum (CAIDIF) and series activities, and taking industrial design as a breakthrough are exactly the answers for Liuzhou.

CAIDIF made its debut with brilliant results

The 1st CAIDIF was held in 2018, embarking on a new journey of Liuzhous determination to move from traditional manufacturing to smart manufacturing and inject new momentum into urban development. It also marks a new phase that Liuzhou actively integrates into Guangxis opening-up development pattern, expanding the Belt and Road cooperation towards ASEAN.

In that year, the 1st CAIDIF attracted many domestic and foreign design experts, including Japanese architectural and industrial designer Masayuki Kurokawa, Intels creative director and former Apple product engineer Kapil Kane, famous architect David Picazo, and President of LKK Innovation Design Group Jia Wei. They jointly discussed several topics on empowering enterprises with innovative design, injecting “smart manufacturing” genes into industrial upgrading, and revitalizing traditional industrial cities.

In addition, Mr. Boni Pudjianto, then Director of International Marketing of Indonesia Agency Creative Economy, and Prof. Dr. Narumon Saardchom, then Assistant Minister of Finance of the Kingdom of Thailand and other government leaders of ASEAN countries also attended the forum. They shared the ASEAN countries demand and emphasis on economic innovation, as well as their expectations for cooperation with Chinese design forces. At this forum, representatives of China and ASEAN also signed Joint Memorandum on the Belt and Road Industrial Design and Innovation Development, and reached a cooperation consensus on the establishment of the “China-ASEAN Urban Sustainable Design Collaboration Platform”.

Based on China-ASEAN bilateral needs, the influence of CAIDIF has gradually expanded. At the 2nd forum held in 2019, more political and business guests from China and ASEAN countries attended the forum and discussed new opportunities for China-ASEAN cooperation around industrial design and innovation.

Dr. Pun-Arj Chairatana, Director of the National Innovation Agency of the Ministry of Science and Technology of Thailand, said, “The nature of innovation is complex and diverse. I believe that a country cannot alone dominate the evolution of the innovation ecosystem. Because of this, the rise of bilateral or multilateral partnership platforms can help foster and accelerate innovation cooperation.”

The Former Chief Minister of Singapore Chan Soo Sen also stated that Singapore is willing to cooperate with ASEAN to incubate and invest in R&D and innovation projects, and expand the market to achieve mutual benefit.Singapore is also willing to act as an intermediary to promote cooperation in R&D and innovation between China and ASEAN countries and their enterprises.

Under the strong cooperation consensus, the 2nd forum also produced practical cooperation results. LKK Innovation Design Group has signed cooperation agreements with the Emperor House Co., Ltd  of Thailand, Thammasat University and other ASEAN enterprises and colleges. At the same time, with the help of China ASEAN Industrial Design & Innovation Forum, LKK has established cooperation institutions in Guangxi to regularly carry out exchange activities of innovative design and promote Chinese enterprises to settle in ASEAN, which contributed to the cooperation between China and ASEAN in industrial design and innovation.

The 3rd Forum will continue to be brilliant and upgraded

2020 is undoubtedly a special year. The ongoing COVID-19 epidemic has changed the global economic and trade landscape. When the economic and trade cooperation between Europe, the United States and other countries with China was weakened by negative factors, the trade between ASEAN and China rose against the trend and ASEAN became Chinas largest trading partner. Many experts believe that in the future, the potential and vitality of China-ASEAN cooperation will continue to be released and revealed and deepening cooperation in various fields is still the common demand of China and ASEAN in coping with all kinds of challenges and promoting economic and social development.

In this context, the 3rd CAIDIF will be held on November 18, 2020. This forum, themed with “Draw an Intelligent Industrial Blueprint, Revitalize Modern Manufacturing Industry”, will continue to invite guests from China-ASEAN Center and ASEAN countries such as Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore, etc. to conduct keynote speeches and exchange through online and offline and provide suggestions for the development of modern Smart Manufacturing in Liuzhou and China-ASEAN industrial design and innovation.

Different from previous sessions, the 3rd Forum will seek breakthroughs and expand its influence in many aspects.

Under the framework of the forum this year, Liuzhou will also host the 1st “Golden Bauhinia Cup” of China-ASEAN Industrial Design Competition, themed with “Design Empowering New Intelligent Travel Models”. It will invite design companies, institutions, colleges, and individuals in the China-ASEAN region to attend and exchange views and ideas for actively creating a social atmosphere that focuses on the development of the industrial design industry, so as to attract people with talent in industrial design. In addition, the competition awards event will be held on the forum.

It is worth mentioning that three Liuzhou local enterprises of SAIC-GM-Wuling Automobile Company, Dongfeng Liuzhou Auto Co., Ltd. and Guangxi Hugui Food Group Co., Ltd.  issued enterprise proposition for the competition in combination with their own needs, which will not only increase the attraction of forum series activities to the design circles of China and ASEAN, but also will truly empower the development of industries and enterprises.

In addition, China Industrial Design Association and Shenzhen Industrial Design Profession Association have been invited to be the supporting units and co-organizers of this forum. At the same time, according to the forum organizer, this forum will also strive to invite the National University of Singapore, Academy of Art & Design, Tsinghua University, Hunan University, Henan University of Science and Technology to participate in the forum. The organizers of the forum said that they will strive to make series of activities related to the forum international platforms that promotes the integration of industry, academia, research and application .

Despite the impact of the epidemic, based on the strong momentum of China-ASEAN cooperation and Liuzhous determination to promote the development of the industrial design industry, it is foreseeable that the 3rd Forum will be improved based on the previous two forums, not only in the activities, but also the human resources and attention it attracts, as well as the expected results of the forum. The renewed 3rd China-ASEAN Industrial Design & Innovation Forum is well worth looking forward to!
