Dubbing is like Second Life, an online virtual world where users can imitate a soundtrack and connect with others using voice and text. When dubbing on the stage, you are no longer the one you have been in real life but another trying to resonate with audience with your voices and emotions. Both activities lead us to a new world, in which we are free to search for the unknown selves. Difficult as it may be, dubbing can be an immensely satisfying experience.

When I first heard about the competition, I was hesitant. In front of me were two major challenges: to form a strong team and to select an appealing movie clip. Luckily, four like?minded peers came together and fought side by side. However, the process was not smooth. At first, we picked the classic four?player game in the film Carnage, which displays the ugliness of human nature. But the films lack of popularity forced us to change direction. In an urgency, we turned to the well?known classic comedy, The Big Bang Theory, which seemed to be just perfect for its time span and setting of the scene. However, when we were feeling good about ourselves, the super?fast pace of the dialogue and the strengths of other teams made us stressed out.

Instead of giving up, we believed in the power of practice and teamwork. Not only did we urge each other to pay attention to the subtle differences between pronunciations, but we also encouraged each other by recognizing small progress. Step by step, our teams performance improved. By working together, we also developed unspoken understanding among ourselves. Then finally came the final competition and our efforts paid off—we won the first prize with the highest score!

Just like in Second Life, I seem to have found and conquered an unexplored territory, in which members in a team provided one another with mutual support and moved toward the “promised land” together.

The road to a host

主持人是怎样炼成的

“Thats all of tonights party, and thanks again for attending the dubbing contest.” As the four hosts gave a final bow and the PowerPoint switched to the last page, the entire lecture hall burst into applause and cheers. What happened? Well, the story began a week ago.

Our school was holding a dubbing contest and many students formed teams and registered for the preliminary contests. At the same time, word came that hosts for the final round were being elected. I hesitated for a long time since I wanted to try both. Finally, I chose to run for the host and I made it, which made me think that hosting was going to be easy, but I soon realized what a big mistake I had made.

The biggest problem was the limit of time. The moment I met my three partners, we realized that we almost had to rewrite the entire script used last year due to its poor grammar and bad collocation. Apparently, we had to work on a tight schedule to get the job done. Luckily, it turned out that the four of us were quite a team. Grace, who was outstanding in writing, managed to finish that long script based on the hosting procedures created by the other two, while I made the PowerPoint of the opening ceremony. Everything seemed to go well, but something unexpected happened.

It was a total mess when we were doing the rehearsal the day before the contest. Not only did we fail to follow the procedures of the ceremony, but also many lines in the script could not go with the procedures. We made full use of every break to fix the problems. Not until the last minute before the contest did we finish all the changes. That was really a huge challenge for all four of us.

Fortunately, the dubbing competition was quite successful. Our voices travelled calmly through the air, passing our passion and confidence to every member of the audience. Except for a few mistakes, the show went on smoothly one after another. After all the competitors got scored for their performances and teachers gave their comments, we announced the end of the ceremony.

The summit is also the beginning. Indeed, after the dubbing contest, not only I but also my classmates have learned to step out of our comfort zones, challenging ourselves with new fields and gaining friendship with peers in our schools and beyond.

Star on the stage

By the time the music faded away, the thunderous applause broke out, and I considered it the most exciting present for a performer. The enthusiastic cheers from my fellow schoolmates were the most unforgettable part of the dubbing competition for me.

Just one week before the final round of the competition, I was informed to give a performance, which meant that my partner and I only got one week to prepare for it. Fortunately, my partner Haoyu Qin, a fabulous singer and monitor of our class, quickly calmed down and told me to take it easy. Things went on quite smoothly and we decided on the song in less than two minutes, City of Stars from the Oscar?winning film La La Land. We were sure that the audience would love the rhythm of light jazz and the impressive chorus. In the following week, Haoyu and I practiced and practiced, whenever and wherever we were available: in the playground, dorm, classroom and even the canteen.

Finally came the final round of dubbing contest and we were anxiously waiting for our turn to perform. When the host announced that it was time for our performance. “You go first,” my partner whispered. “Okay,” I replied with a slight trembling voice. I came up on the stage amid clapping and cheering all over the lecture hall and went to my spot. When I looked back at Haoyu, she was looking at me, too. The glance of encouragement we got from each other lighted up the whole hall and made our nervousness gone. The audience quieted down and we started. Our voices caught everyones attention immediately. When it came to the chorus of the song, some of my schoolmates couldnt help clapping their hands and I could even hear someone cheering. Everything was perfect. When the song came to the end, the applause seemed to last forever. We bowed to the audience sincerely, and then looked at each other with huge smiles on our faces.

Im sure that Ill never forget that night. As the lyrics in City of Stars go, “City of stars, you never shined so brightly.” Indeed, that night is the brightest night that I have ever experienced.

Last week a dubbing competition was held in our school. To be frank, at first, I didnt think it would be an interesting event, because unlike the impressive TV programs with large stages and dazzling light effects, this competition was just going to be held in the small lecture hall in our school.

As soon as I took a seat in the audience, the first group started their performance. I totally changed my mind! They added their voices to Zootopia, a famous animated movie, and they really did a great job! Their pronunciation was accurate and authentic, and they imitated the characters vividly, which really surprised me.

Time went by. The first three programs passed in the blink of an eye. I had to say that I really appreciated the arrangement of the competition. After the first three groups, we got a talent show to watch, a student performing rap music. What was more exciting was that there was a female rapper!

She looked very gentle but her performance was full of enthusiasm and power. Everyone was deeply amazed and started to applaud.

The rest of the competition was quite awesome too. There were a variety of movies dubbed, ranging from the magical Harry Potter to the romantic Beauty and the Beast, from the lovely Despicable Me to the breathtaking Tropic Thunder. All the groups seemed to be well?prepared. Towards the end of the competition, I had been overwhelmed by those wonderful performances and closed my eyes to have a break. Just then, a piece of refreshing melody flew into my ears. Someone was singing City of Stars on the stage! I looked at the stage and found that there were two pretty girls singing. Their voices were tender yet with strong emotions beneath. Everyone was immediately attracted and started to listen carefully. Enthusiastic applause rippled during their songs. That indeed was my favorite part of the competition, which also drew a perfect conclusion to the contest.

There was no doubt that everybody on the scene had a good time, including me. I couldnt help looking forward to the competition next year and I promised to myself that I would definitely take part in it.
