The idea of an Olympic 1)mascot was officially approved at the 20th Session of the International Olympic Committee in Munich 1972. The first official Olympic mascot was Waldi the 2)dachshund at the 1972 Munich Olympic Games. Since then, mascots have become a major element of the Olympic brand. Mascots act as a 3)vehicle for communicating the Olympic spirit to the general public, especially children and youth. They have come in many shapes and sizes, though they all convey the theme of the Olympic Games, and showcase the distinctive geographical features, history and culture of the host city.

The design for Bing Dwen Dwen was chosen from over 5,800 4)submissions from China and 35 countries around the world as part of a global competition arranged by the Beijing 2022 Organising Committee. The designs were reviewed by Chinese and international experts, with the final selections made by teams from the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts.

The mascots for the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympic Game—Bing Dwen Dwen was 5)unveiled at Beijing’s Shougang Ice Hockey Arena on Sept.17, 2019. Bing Dwen Dwen is designed based on the giant panda. As we all know, the giant panda is the national animal of China. They enjoys high recognition around the world. Also they are so adorable and very popular among people. It is not the first time that Panda designed as a mascots of international Games held in China. Dating back to the 1990 Asian Games in Beijing, the image of mascot Panpan, a cute panda, appealed to many across the globe. For China’s first ever Olympic Games in 2008, panda also serves as prototype of Jingjing, one of the Games’ five mascots.

In Mandarin Chinese (the official dialect of China), “Bing” has several meanings, though the most common is ice. The word also symbolises 6)purity and strength, while “Dwen Dwen” means 7)robust, healthy, sincere and lively, and also represents children. And Bing Dwen Dwen is a panda with a high sense of science and technology. It captures attention with its full-body “shell” made out of ice. Chief creator Cao Xue said the inspiration came from traditional Chinese snack tanghulu, which is candied hawthorns on a stick, while the shell also resembles a space suit—a nod to embracing new technologies for a future of infinite possibilities.

A brightly colored halo also 8)adorns Bing Dwen Dwen’s face. The halo’s colors represent the latest advanced technologies of the ice and snow sport tracks. If you look carefully you will see a small, red heart at the center of Dwen Dwen’s left paw. It is representative of Beijing’s hospitality, and China is thrilled to share the spirit of the 2022 Olympic Games with the world.

The mascot embodies the strength and the power of athletes and will help to promote the Olympic spirit. And Bing Dwen Dwen, the mascots for the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympic Game will serve as an ambassador for winter sports, bringing joy to those who participate in and watch the Olympic Winter Games..
