Being a teenager during a global pandemic is difficult. We re spending much of the time in our own homes, and most well?鄄known places become hard to reach. I hope to find joy in nature and use it as an escape from too many online classes and screen time. When my friend Evan suggested that another friend, Philbert, and I join him on a socially distanced hike to Mount Baldy, the tallest peak in the San Gabriel Mountains in Los Angeles, US, I eagerly accepted his offer.

As experienced hikers, Evan, Philbert and I were well?鄄prepared. We first threw obvious necessities such as water and snacks into our backpacks, which were followed by less common emergency supplies: first aid kits (藥箱), flashlights, compasses and maps. We had studied the paths that we would take.

Waking up at dawn, I was very excited, and the start of the hike began smoothly as the three of us enjoyed the fresh morning air. Over the course of our climbing, we stopped for short breaks many times and were even able to see the mountain s ski hut when it was not in use. We took a long hike to the summit as a chance to chat freely. We discussed our favorite movies and books. The final climbing was the steepest (最陡峭的)—hikers such as ourselves were surprised when we were close to a steep cliff on the side that stood over the valley. Careful steps and determination finally brought us to the top—3,069?鄄meter height, where we took a long break to catch our breath and enjoy the view with renewed confidence to overcome the challenges posed by the pandemic.

Andie Ang s personal interest in monkeys was awakened when she was a child. In 1995, Ang s father saw some sailors mistreating a small young African monkey and brought it home.

Just ten at the time, Ang clearly remembers her excitement on first seeing the golden?鄄furred little monkey. She named him Ah Boy and they soon became close companions. “I would cycle through the neighbourhood and Ah Boy would always follow me,” recalls Ang. “Neighbors would stop to look and comment, ‘Oh, so cute!’” Ah Boy quickly developed a daily routine of climbing onto Ang s shoulders to pull her hair apart in search of anything that shouldn t have been there.

But as the years passed, the family became unable to care for the monkey, so Ang turned to the Internet for help. After a complicated and costly process, the day arrived for Ang and Ah Boy to say goodbye. It was a tearful parting for her. Later that day, Ang made up her mind to study monkeys. “The time we spent together made me want to know more about monkeys, the threats to them, and how we can help,” she said.

After getting a Life Sciences degree, Ang went on to complete a PhD in Biological Anthropology with a specialty (專业) in Raffles  banded langurs (黑脊叶猴), a critically endangered species which hadn t been studied for 15 years.

Today, she spends hours in Singapore s Central Catchment Nature Reserve, where the entire local population of Raffles  banded langurs can be found, doing field research in the forest. Her group has done lots of things to preserve this species, identifying and naming every monkey living in residential areas. They enjoyed discovering their individual personalities. Imagine being able to see perfectly in the dark. It has become a reality thanks to a newly developed technology. Now, by simply wearing a pair of glasses, you can drive safely at night, or walk home in complete darkness.

This exciting invention came out at the Australian National University (ANU). The technology is made up of a thin film that can be placed on ordinary glasses. The thin film is inexpensive to make and is lightweight, tiny and actually 100 times thinner than a hair.

The international team has made the invisible (看不見的) visible. “Our technology is able to turn infrared (红外线的) light, which is invisible to the human eye, into images people can clearly see, even far away,” lead researcher Dr Morales said.

Their new type of glasses are able to work at room temperature. They have many future applications. Drivers will be able to find ways better at night, especially when driving on unlit roads. Police can use them when searching at night and hikers who lose their way can feel more confident walking in the dark.

ANU Physics Professor, Dragomir Neshev, praised the world?鄄first technology. “This is the first time anywhere in the world that infrared light has been successfully changed into visible images on an extremely thin screen,” Neshev said. “It s a really exciting development that will change the landscape of night vision forever.”

The inventors are excited to move from the lab towards making practical applications ready for all to use. “While this is the first proof?鄄of?鄄concept(概念验证) experiment, we are actively working to further advance the technology,” said Mohsen Rahmani.

12. Which of the following can best describe the thin film?

A. Lightweight and inexpensive. B. Ordinary and tiny.

C. Expensive and invisible. D. Tiny and invisible.

13. What can people do when wearing the new glasses?

A. Go home quickly. B. Drive better all the day.

C. Feel anxious while hiking. D. Find directions easily at night.

14. What can we know from Neshev and Rahmani s words?

A. The new glasses are the most advanced.

B. The new glasses have been used widely.

C. Inventors are working to further improve the glasses.

D. Inventors will change the functions of the glasses.

15. What is the text trying to express?

A. Technology makes the invisible visible.

B. A new pair of glasses could save lives.

C. A magical film helps us see clearly.

D. Scientists have invented a type of new film.

This story happened to me many years ago, but I can still remember it well. When I was fresh out of school and working in Denver, there was one occasion when I was driving to my parents  home in Missouri for New Year. On my way, I found that my car was running out of gas. So I stopped at a gas station about 50 miles from Oklahoma City, where I was planning to stop and visit a friend. While I was standing in line at the cash counter, I said hello to a couple who were also paying for gas and they responded with their warm smiles.

I took off, but had gone only a few miles when black smoke poured from the back of my car. My car just broke down. What big trouble! I stopped and was wondering what I should do next when a car pulled up behind me. It was the couple I had spoken with at the gas station. They said they would take me to my friend s. We chatted happily on the way to the city, and when I arrived and got off the car, the husband gave me his business card.

Upon arriving home, I wrote a thank?鄄you note to the couple for their help. Soon afterwards, I received a New Year present from them. In their note, they said that helping me had made their holidays more meaningful.

Years later, I drove to a meeting in a nearby town in an early morning. Road conditions were quite poor on the way and it was said that cars broke down frequently there. Anyway, I got there safe and sound. After the meeting, I returned to my car and found that I d got a flat tire. I was at a loss when I noticed that the Friendly Ford dealership—a shop selling Ford cars—was right next door. I walked over and found two workers in the showroom.

I entered the shop and found the two workers happened to be the couple.
