World cultural heritage in China
Situated at a strategic point along the Silk Road in Gansu Province, the Mogao Grottoes are famous for their statues and wall paintings, spanning 1000 years of Buddhist art.
The grottoes, a collection of 492 Buddhist temples carved into the rock walls,are decorated with 45,000 square meters of paintings and more than 2000 colored statues of ancient Chinese art.The paintings show beautifully-painted designs, witnessing the civilizations of ancient China during the Sui, Tang and Song dynasties.The colored statues with Buddhist themes differ in size, ranging from a few centimeters to 33 meters high, embodying the remarkable imagination of their makers.
All these treasures tell Buddhist stories, witness the ancient Chinese art, politics, economies as well as cultural exchanges between China and the world and are vivid materials for future generations to appreciate and study.
