第一节 (共15小题;每小题2.5分,满分37.5分)

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项。

A

Motoring writer, Simon Heptinstall once said that the most interesting thing about cars isnt the car at all. Is it true that motorists make better stories than their motors? Here are three stories to help make your own decision.

Henry Ford built the Quadricycle

In 1896, the great inventive engineer Henry Ford finished building his first car, called the Quadricycle, in a small shed behind his house. He became one of the worlds most successful businessmen later—but this time he had badly miscalculated. The completed Quadricycle wouldnt fit out through the door. Hed built it bigger than the width of the door. Henry had to use an axe to chop out the doorframe to make the opening wider. Then he could ultimately get his pioneering creation out for its first drive. It is now an exhibit in Henry Ford Museum.

Noel Gallagher forgot buying a car

Millionaire rock star Noel Gallagher forgot hed bought a brand?new classic car for ?110,000. The former guitarist was puzzled when a Jaguar Mark Ⅱ arrived at his house on a delivery truck. It turned out that he had ordered it two years previously. When he ordered it, he hoped to learn to drive—but never got round to it. He forgot the whole thing, and the car still sits unused in his garage.

Maria Mugno made her car hairy

According to the Guinness Book of World Records, the worlds hairiest car is a Fiat 50 owned by Maria Mugno from Salerno, Italy. The Italian hairdresser had spent hundreds of hours importing bags of human hair from India, because she claimed the hair was stronger. She then stuck the locks onto every surface of the car, inside and out. Her furry Fiat is still road?illegal however.

1. What is the most interesting thing about cars according to Simon?

A. The drivers.

B. The price.

C. The speed.

D. The appearance.

2. What do the three cars have in common?

A. Their owners are Guinness record holders.

B. They are invented by their owners.

C. They are not permitted to go on the road.

D. They are not in use for certain reasons.

Last year, in March, I jumped into a heated pool in California to meet a dolphin named Delle. As I approached her, Delle turned towards me and became playful, greeting me by splashing me with her beak (鸟喙). Delighted, I reached out to pat her shiny skin. It felt rubbery, which was the main giveaway that Delle the dolphin was a robot.

Just as fake (假的) animals are becoming very realistic, its becoming increasingly less acceptable to use live animals for entertainment purposes. Documentaries like Blackfish (2013) and The Cove (2009) have exposed some of the horrific treatment and suffering of ocean mammals. The resulting public protest has made aquariums (水族館) controversial, attracting less visitors.

Arguably, entertaining people with captive (被圈养的) animals is vital for animal conservation. Many zoos and aquariums actively try to promote conservation efforts by providing educational experience and encouraging their interest in the natural world. This type of entertainment is useful, because it inspires people to care about the natural world.

At first, this seems like a reason to avoid replacing captive animals with technology. However, research in the rapid?developed field of human?robot interaction is showing astonishing results on engagement with robots that can imitate lifelike behaviour. When physically interactive, robots attract a lot of attention. People tend to treat them like theyre alive, even though they know perfectly well theyre just machines.

If we start to replace the animals in our theme parks with machines, will this trend decrease our wonder in the natural world? A bunch of people expressed negative gut reactions (本能反应) after I posted the video of the robot dolphin on an online platform. And yet, I dont believe that using robot animals will cause us to forget the worth of living creatures.

4. Why does the author mention Delle in paragraph 1?

A. To share a special experience.

B. To promote rubbery dolphins.

C. To draw attention to robot animals.

D. To describe a dolphin performance.

5. What can we learn about live animals in zoos?

A. They are cruelly treated.

B. They make zoos popular.

C. They are well entertained.

D. They deserve conservation.

6. What is paragraph 4 mainly about?

A. Reasons for replacing captive animals with robots.

B. Benefits of entertaining people with robots.

C. Research results on interaction with robots.

D. Public concerns over engagement with robots.

7. What is the authors attitude to replacing captive animals with machines?

A. Favorable. B. Intolerant. C. Doubtful. D. Unclear.

C

Park guards who watch North Americas highest mountain say inexperienced and overconfident climbers are taking more risks and endangering themselves and other climbers. The guards suggest many climbers are trying to move up the mountain too fast after having a year of climbing.

Denali in southern Alaska is 6,194 meters above sea level. So, climbing it requires a high level of skill. Climbers also need to acclimate to high altitudes (海拔), which is not needed for most mountains in the US.

The National Park Service recently made a statement warning that many climbers in the Alaska Range are showing signs of inexperience and overconfidence. After reporting no deaths in 2018 and 2019, at least two people have already died on the mountain in 2021. Two others were seriously injured, officials said.

In 2021, a skier from the state of Colorado died after falling into a very deep cut in the ice. A climber from the state of Idaho was killed by a large falling piece of ice.

The guards made their statement after a Canadian climber was seriously injured after falling nearly 305 meters. He was not wearing climbing ropes. Other climbers reported the fall. People in a helicopter (直升機) studying mountain ice in the area were able to save the man, park officials said.

The National Park Services statement named several reasons for the increase in injuries and deaths. They included extreme tiredness, untested body reactions to high altitudes, quickly changing weather, and not bringing the right equipment.

In recent years, the guards said they have seen more climbers try to make Denalis top by climbing 2,134 meters from the final base camp to the top in one day. This is nearly impossible to do except for the most experienced climbers.

Experts suggest that climbers take 17 to 21 days to reach the top of Denali. That includes rest days and extra days to wait out bad weather.

8. What does the underlined phrase “acclimate to” in paragraph 2 probably mean?

A. Get used to.

B. Get tired of.

C. Take control of.

D. Look forward to.

9. What was special about climbers in 2021 compared with those in 2018 and 2019?

A. They were not so confident.

B. They faced higher altitudes.

C. Most of them were beginners.

D. Deaths came up among them.

10. What mistake did the Canadian climber make?

A. He didnt train himself to climb.

B. He didnt make sure of his safety.

C. He didnt stay with other climbers.

D. He knew little about mountain ice.

11. What is paragraph 6 mainly about?

A. Dangers of having little climbing experience.

B. Results of climbing mountains in a hurry.

C. Causes of the climbing accidents.

D. Rules of safe mountain climbing.

Technology has undoubtedly opened up the world for me, literally, in the case of my fully accessible home. My windows are automatic, and my front door is automatic too. There are also my wheelchairs. I guess that any wheelchair user will say the best invention is that of the wheelchair. Its a tool bringing independence and comfort.

Last week, I took a well?deserved break from work and went on a staycation in my local area. On the first day, I was heading further out in my power wheelchair than Ive ever been on my own. This chair is almost like a transformer. I like the speed, the phone charger and the flexible feature. Its a wonderful creation.

However, while there are many benefits that come with technology, I still live in a disabling world. For example, out in my power wheelchair that day, feeling free and easy, I headed straight to the shop not far away. I deserve to feel heard and included when innovation is concerned. But when I got there, I was confronted by self?service checkouts. While they are designed for easy and quick service, for me and many other disabled people, the lack of face?to?face services can put us at a disadvantage. Not only are the checkouts far too high, but also they are awkwardly designed so that you cannot approach them in a wheelchair. So, I waited for someone to assist me. In just a matter of a few hours, I had seen how technology and accessibility advancements have empowered me and then, in the next breath, disabled me.

I still live in a disabling world with sub?standard accessibility. Therefore, disabled people by and large are more likely to rely on mechanical and technological devices such as lifts and communication aids. Unfortunately, these things are sometimes abused and mistreated, making the person relying on them dependent on others.

12. What does the author think of technology according to paragraphs 1 and 2?

A. He casts some doubts on it.

B. He shows much gratitude for it.

C. He expresses curiosity about it.

D. He feels really carefree with it.

13. What happened to the author in the shop?

A. He came across many other disabled people by chance.

B. He waited quite a few hours in order to check out.

C. He was unable to seek assistance from others.

D. He couldnt use the self?service checkouts by himself.

14. Why does the author say he still lives in a disabling world?

A. He thinks it is not easy to make his voice heard.

B. Some shops are inaccessible to wheelchair users.

C. He finds it really hard to fit in with non?disabled people.

D. Things related to technology are sometimes out of service.

15. What would be the best title for the text?

A. My different views concerning disability

B. How I make full advantage of technology

C. My love?hate relationship with technology

D. How I live independently as a disabled man

Calendars are for managing your time. I appreciate a calendars determined efforts to manage time.  16  For the past several years, Ive kept a planner with me at all times. The real magic of planners, to me, comes in the blank space where I reflect on the past and imagine the future.

You start by creating a wish list for your ideal life. The idea is to be as specific as possible. You then pick the one goal that would have the biggest positive impact. You break that goal down into smaller tasks, and then prioritize them.  17  This method turns a general idea in your head into something that you can actually accomplish. From there, you can reflect every month on how you spent your time, and whether what you did actually is consistent with the goals you set.

18  It leaves no digital footprint, but it does leave a paper trail that I can look back on for years to come. It wont be impatient when I ignore it, and it will not be exported to outlook. It requires me to sit in quiet conversation with myself, reflecting on my past and visualizing my future. It forces me to answer hard truth, like what do I really want out of life and am I spending my days in line with who I want to be.  19

Planning helps me ensure that Im not a passenger at the mercy of my calendar, but rather driving toward a destination that I choose.  20  It always keeps me moving forward.

A. Then, add those tasks to the calendar.

B. Theres no pressure to make it perfect.

C. But planners are for dreaming without limits.

D. Its easy to appreciate calendars for their usefulness.

E. Using a paper planner brings me both joy and a sense of calm.

F. Its an important practice that benefits me in various ways.

G. After all, our lives are the sum of how we spend our time and what we pay attention to.

On the Internet, a sea of articles offer us tips to make sleep perfect. Also, lots of advice columns tell us were sleeping wrong. Even 36.(bad), some experts claim that if were not sleeping right, our life is going to be shorter. What makes us 37.(trap) in worries most is that were not getting enough sleep, less than seven hours a night. But there are two problems.

The first problem is that seven to eight hours of sleep, while recommended to adults, is just 38.average. Its true that not getting enough sleep in the long term 39.(associate) with health problems. 第二节 (满分25分)

阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

When my father doesnt answer the phone, I wont think anything of it. Hes 75 years old and doesnt always want to talk.

This was what I told myself when I called him and he didnt answer one Wednesday afternoon in January earlier last year. I was in Thailand for a trip. It was sunny there, but in Ohio, where my dad lives, it was cold and snowy.

I tried calling my dad two days later. Again, no answer. I was starting to feel uneasy. Thankfully, I didnt have enough time to worry because he immediately called back. But his voice was dry and weak. He said he had fallen down and had been on the floor for days. He was calling from the floor.

I immediately used another phone to call my sister Kristel. A little moment later, I hung up on her and continued talking with my dad. I didnt want to hang up because I didnt know if he had a heart attack or a stroke. What I did know was that I wished I wasnt so far away.

My dad spent the next three days in the hospital. The doctors didnt know what had happened. The tests they ran didnt tell them anything because he had been on the floor for too long.

Besides her work time, my sister was the one sitting next to my dad for hours in the hospital taking care of my father. She had always been the one in the front line of his care. But it was becoming apparent that she was burning out.

For most of my life, Ive not taken on any kind of family responsibility. Im the youngest. I studied abroad. I vacationed in faraway lands and I was always too busy to come home. But my sister Kristel, who is 10 years older than me, has always been responsible. As she grew up, she helped our parents on the farm. Ever since she was in high school, Kristel has always had multiple jobs. But when my dad fell and was rushed to the hospital, I decided to spend more time with him.

注意:續写词数应为150左右。

Paragraph 1:

When I eventually arrived at the hospital, my dad was still lying in bed.

Paragraph 2:

At the moment, I promised myself that I wouldnt leave him until he recovered.
