The Effects of the Digital Media Technology in Zhejiang Nature Museum on Visitors’ Experiences

Abstract:With the technology developing, digital media technology comes into being. Because of its powerful capabilities, several exhibitions and museums gradually adapt it to show their exhibits in some vivid ways. This study was aimed to discuss the impacts of the digital media technology implementation on visitors experiences in Zhejiang Nature Museum. Based on previous measurement efforts, we did a questionnaire survey, gathered all the information and analyzed data. According to the analysis, visitors were satisfied with the digital media devices and hoped there would be more interesting interactive devices to make them know more about the nature.

Introduction:

As the society develops, people's quality of life has been improved, following with the increasing demand for scientific and technological innovation. Sothe digital media technology comes into being, which is in the field of social industry development belongs to the emerging industry, and for its technical and scientific integration and high-quality technology, ithas a great impact on many aspects of life.

Zhejiang Nature Museum is one of the oldest museums founded in China, and the only provincial museum in Zhejiang province with life science, earth science specimen collection, research and display as the main business activities. Before, due to its large collection of fossils, specimens and other natural exhibits, it was very popular with many people. However, because of this museum have not taken good use of modern technology, the display of the exhibitswas too boring to attract visitors to visit.

But now, Zhejiang Nature Museum is taking advantage of the digital media technology, for example, they rely onthe meanings and storiesto animate those silent exhibits, make interactive games and use VR technology to create a personal immersive scene and so on. The implementation of these novel measures begins to show the effects, such as making the visitors become more curious about the knowledge of the nature and participating more actively in the exhibition, so they gradually win the visitors back.

Methods:To improve our understanding of the relationship between visitors experiences and the use of digital media technology in Zhejiang Nature Museum, we did a questionnaire survey. Because the young people are more keen to interactive technology than other people, so the main people of the survey who we choose arethe college students who had been to Zhejiang Nature Museum. Also, in order to have a deeper understanding of the museum's digital media applications, we went to Zhejiang Nature Museum on our own.

Results:A total of six questionnaires were collected, the statistics of the visitors reply are as following:

In these questionnaires, we can infer that these college students are very content with the interactive system, and they think the most effective use of digital media technology is it can enhance the fun and interactivity of the experience, so they can learn more knowledge about nature. And in the ways of using digital technology, they prefer to try the VR and interactive games. On one hand, they believe that VR technology let them experience something that cannot be felt in the real world. On the other hand, the interactive games would combine knowledge with fun, they can learn while playing the games.

However, some visitors came up with some problems and their unhappiness:

1. The digital media devices in the museum are not enough for visitors to use, visitors always have to line up.

2. Some equipment lacks of repairmentand maintenance, some functions were damaged and their appearances became not beautiful.

3. Some videos quality is not good, anddoesnt show the characteristics and origins of the exhibits.

Discussion:People are often attracted by new things and tend to pursue them. It is their curiosity that makes the emergence of new digital media technology appeals to people to experience. With digital media technologys unprecedented intuitiveness, interactivity and entertainment, as well as unique creative aesthetics, the rapid development of digital media is bringing vitality to the museum and has become an important role in promoting all-round innovation of museums. It rises from the satisfaction of the original function of the museum to the spiritual care of people, breaks the space limitation and time limit and interacts with the audience, so that the audience is full of curiosity about everything displayed by the museum. At the same time, it subvert the innovative way to help visitors to multi - dimensional, multi-level understanding of exhibits, not only for fun, but also relax the body and mind, cause thinking, touch the feeling, So that the audience can better understand the museum's collection and related knowledge, so that visitors can learn more knowledge. It well protects the precious exhibits and also changes the traditional museum tour mode, mobilize the enthusiasm of visitors to visit and study in an interesting way, so that visitors quality and efficiency of receiving and handling information can be improved, better realize interactive communication.

Conclusion:In conclusion, Zhejiang Nature Museum does a pretty good job at the use of digital media technology. It reasonably combines the meaning that the exhibition wants to express and the story behind it with modern digital media technology, so that the efficiency of visitors visiting the museum is greatly improved.It appeals to the visitors who want to learn more about nature come to have a visit and forms a good reputation in society.

Nevertheless, there are still some suggestions for Zhejiang Nature Museum to refer:

1. Increase the number of equipmentand develop new equipmentfor visitors to use.

2. Check the equipment regularly.

3. According to the meanings and stories of the exhibits, make high-quality videos for visitors to watch.
