Canberra is the capital of Australia. When the Federal Government of Australia was formed in 1901, no one knew where Australias capital would be. The two cities of Melbourne and Sydney both wanted the honor. Instead, the founding fathers chose a piece of land between the two cities for the new capital. The government would build a new city called Canberra as the countrys capital.

In 1911 the government invited the world leading architects to enter designs for Canberra in a contest. An architect from Chicago named Walter Griffin won. The government decided to build Canberra according to his plan. Men started to work on Canberra in 1913. Twenty-four years later, the city was finished, but the government moved to this new city ten years before it was completed.

At one time, almost everyone in Canberra worked for the government. However, the city today has become a center of education and favorite place for tourists. Now people can hold a government job, or they can work in business. They also make a living by teaching or meeting the needs of tourists.

People find life in Canberra very relaxing and pleasant. The city is surrounded by beautiful mountains where people can ski. There is a large man-made lake lined with beaches and parks in the center of Canberra.

Important changes took place in the lives of women in the 19th century. When men went out from their farms to cities to seek jobs in industry, peasant women had to take over the sowing, growing, and harvesting of the fields as well as caring for cattle and raising children. When women also moved to the cities in search of work, they found that it was increasingly separated by sex and that employment opportunities for women were limited to the lower-paid jobs. Later in the century, women in industry gathered mainly in cloth-making factories, though some worked in mining or took similarly difficult and tiring jobs.

In the 1800s, service work also absorbed(吸纳) a great number of women who arrived in the cities from the country. Young women especially took jobs as servants in middle-class and upper-class homes; and as more and more men were drawn into industry, domestic service(家庭服务) became increasingly a female job. In the second half of the century, however, chances of other service work also opened up to women, from sales jobs in shops to teaching and nursing. These jobs came to be done mainly by women and low paid.

For thousands of years, when almost all work was done on the family farm or in the family firm(家庭作坊),home and workplace had been the same, In these cases, women could do farm work or hand work, and perform home duties such as child care and preparation of meals at the same time. Along with the development of industry, the central workplace, however, such as the factory and the department store, separated home from work.Faced with the necessity for women to choose between home and workplace, Western society began to give particular attention to the role of women as homemakers with more energy than ever before.

Every school has its own set of rules to keep students disciplined. The rules change from one school to another. Some schools are much stricter than others. There are some rules that look strange or funny to us. Here are some funny school rules:

Different shoes in the US

For safety at some US schools, students must have a pair of indoor shoes to change into at school every day. This makes sure students wont fall over on the slippery floors.

Chewing gum is not allowed in many US school buildings, as it is difficult to clean up. And if students chew gum in class, they may not focus on their study.

No strange hair in the UK

Strange hairstyles are not allowed in British schools. But they might allow students to wear certain hairstyles during the WorldCup years. Two students had a special design shaved into their hair during the 2002 World Cup. But they were not accepted by their school after that because the school said the rules had changed since then.

Tough Japanese rules

Most schools demand that students wear uniforms, such as sports suits or skirts. But many Japanese schools even regulate the colour of underwear! They also demand that girls white socks be folded in a certain way and boys heads be shaved. Other Japanese schools tell students that they may not date, go to the movies, leave home after sunset or play video games without permission from the school.

Climate change, pollution, overuse of water and development are killing some of the worlds most famous rivers including Chinas Yangtze. Indias Ganges and Africas Nile. WWF said on Tuesday. At the global launch of its report “Worlds Top 10 Rivers at Risk”, the group said many rivers could dry out, affecting hundreds of millions of people and killing unique aquatic (水生的) life.

“If these rivers die, millions will lose their livelihoods, biodiversity(生物多样性) will be destroyed on a massive scale, there will be less fresh water and agriculture, resulting in less food security,” said. Rayi Singh, secretary-general of WWF. The report launched ahead of “World Water Day ”today, also cited the Rio Grande in the United States, the Mekong in Asia, Europes Danube, La Plata in South America and Australias Murray-Darling as in need of greater protection.

Rivers are the worlds main source of fresh water and WWF says about half of the available supply is already being used up. Dams have destroyed habitats and cut rivers off from their flood plains while climate change could affect the seasonal water flows that feed them, the report said. Fish populations, the top source of protein and overall life support for hundreds of thousands of communities worldwide, are also being threatened. The Yangtze basin is one of the most polluted rivers in the world because of decades of heavy industrialization, damming and huge influxes(流入)of sediment (积淀) from land conversion.

Climate change, including higher temperatures, also means serious consequences for fishery productivity, water supply and political security in Africas arid Nile basin. Tributaries(支流) flowing into the Ganges are drying up because of irrigation, WWF said.

68. What does the text mainly about?

A. Saving fresh water in our life.

D. Worlds top 10 rivers are at risk.

69. We can infer from the text that.

A. riversdying out could affect food security

70. The top 10 rivers are fast dying as a result of the following EXCEPT_______.

C. pollution D. dams

71. WWF is probably a name of_______.

A. an organization B. a newspaper

C. a magazine D. a report

Happy birthday! Do birthdays really make people happy? Of course they do. Birthdays celebrate the day we were born. Besides, that an extra candle on the cake suggests another year of growth and maturity(成熟) —or so we hope. We all like to imagine that were getting wiser and not just older. Most of us enjoy seeing the miracle(奇迹) of growth in others, as well. For instance, seeing our children develop and learn new things makes us feel proud. For Americans, like people in most cultures, growing up is a wonderful process(过程). But growing old? Thats a different story.

Growing old is not exactly pleasant for people in youth-oriented(以年轻人为中心) American culture. Most Americans like to look young, act young and feel young. As the old saying goes, “Youre as young as you feel.” Older people joke about how many years young they are, rather than how many years old. People in some countries value the aged as a source of experience and wisdom. But Americans seem to favor those that are young, or at least “young at heart.”

Many older Americans find the “golden years” to be anything but golden. Economically, “senior citizens” often struggle just to get by. Retirement(退休) at age 65 brings a sharp decrease in personal income. Social security(安全) benefits usually cannot make up the difference. Older people may suffer from poor nutrition(营养), medical care and housing. Some even experience age discrimination. In 1987, American sociologist Pat Moore dressed up like an older person and wandered city streets. She was often treated rudely-even cheated and robbed. However, dressed as a young person, she received much more respect.

Unfortunately, the elderly population in America is increasing fast. Why? People are living longer. Fewer babies are being born. And middle-aged "baby boomers" are rapidly entering the groups of the elderly. America may soon be a place where wrinkles(皱纹) are “in”. Marketing experts are already noticing this growing group of consumers.

72. Growing up is a wonderful thing because__________.

A. people can celebrate their birthdays

B. people can become more mature and wiser

C. people can receive many presents

D. people will feel younger at heart

73. We can infer from the second paragraph that ___________.

A. young people lack experience and wisdom

B. American older people often joke about their old age

C. American culture is very young

D. different countries have different opinions on the old age

74. The underlined sentence (in Paragraph 4)means “_______.”

A. The golden years can make the old earn lots of money and receive good medical care

B. The old people in America are leading a hard life without good nutrition, medical care or housing

C. The old in America have to retire at the age of 65

D. American social security benefits are not good

75. From the last paragraph we know that theunderlined word “in” can be replaced by ________.

A. serious B. bad

C. disappearing slowly D. growing fast
