Calligraphers Showed Their Works

From December 10 till 14, “Island for Freehand Aesthetics, Waterfront for Arts Gathering”—the 3rdJoint Creation and Exchange Meeting Across the Straits (JCEMAS) was held in Sanya, Hainan Province. More than 70 writers, calligraphers, painters and photographers across the Straits came here for inspiration and collaboration, and through their lens and brushes, demonstrated the beauty of humanity and nature in Hainan Province. The participants at this session were famous writers Jiang Zilong, Liu Heng, Han Shaogong, Zai Zai, Ji Ji, Qiu Xiuzhi and Wu Junyao, painters Nyima Tsering, Guo Xianzhong, Chen Yunguang, Fang Baojia, Chen Xiandong, Lin Jinzhong, Li Zhenming, Huang Xiangling, Shen Ping, Huang Kailu and Zeng Guoming, calligraphers Su Shishu, Wu Dongmin, Zhao Changqing, Zhai Xin, Zhang Binghuang, Xie Jiyun, Guo Xianlun, Xu Xueming and Zhao Weifu, photographers Qian Han, Wu Pu’ao, Wu Guohua, Lin Tianfu, Huang Ziming and He Jingtai. Within the five days, this event had abundant and colorful contents such as series of inspiration journey of “Beautiful Sanya”, “Spring Festival Couplets” by calligraphers and painters across the Straits, collaboration of calligraphic long scroll of “Boundless Spring Breeze at Sea”—Su Dongpo’s Hainan Poetry Selection, collaboration of large-scale traditional Chinese painting Feelings of Mountain and Stream, exchange of calligraphic masters with teachers and students of a primary school for Li ethnic group, and lectures of writers across the Straits at universities of Hainan, all of which left many wonderful legends and unforgettable moments.

Distinguished attendees at this meeting and related events were Yu Xun, president of Hainan Provincial CPPCC, Ye Kedong, vice president of Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Straits, Li Jun, vice secretary of CPC Hainan Provincial Committee, Yang Chengzhi, vice president of the 9th National Congress of CFLAC as well as related leaders and celebrities. While meeting with the writers and artists at this event, Ye Kedong pointed out that the relation across the Straits entered a grim period and “Desinicization” occurred to the culture in Taiwan. Writers and artists from both Hainan and Taiwan have made a lot of efforts in cultural exchange and economic cooperation, which made an outstanding contribution to promoting the friendly communication across the Straits. As Yang Chengzhi said, this meeting across the Straits has become a significant nongovernmental cultural exchange of great social influence. Many masters in literature and arts from Mainland, Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan will help to inherit and promote Chinese culture across the Straits, and it is necessary for celebrities of culture across the Straits to deepen cultural exchange and jointly promote traditional Chinese culture, so as to realize the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.

Finding Relatives with a Note: A Surprise

On December 12, on a bus that was returning from the event, Zhang Songlin, president of Across-Straits (Hainan) Cultural Exchange Union (ASHCE) as the event organizer, announced a good piece of news while holding his mobile phone, “thanks to local media, the relatives at Hainan of the 76-year-old Taiwanese writer Qiu Xiuzhi, a distinguished guest of this event, are already found and will come to meet Ms. Qiu during this evening.”At this news, all the people on this bus cheered and Ms. Qiu was too excited to express any words within that instant. This strong-minded senior citizen, who was still living like a youngster and refused to be helped to get on or get off the bus, told us the whole story. Before she set off from Taiwan to Hainan, her husband Mr. Fu Zhaoxiang wrote two names respectively on two notes—“Fu Xiangxiong” and “Fu Jiaying”, his elder brother and sister. Almost in his 80s, Fu Zhaoxiang has his ancestor origin in Wenchang of Hainan Province and his father had participated in Songhu Battle and later passed away. After 1949, he was taken to Taiwan and from then on, he was unable to contact any relative in his hometown. “Upon the subject of his hometown in Hainan, my husband invariably shed tears. Having traveled to many countries in the world, he has never returned to Hainan yet. Probably as a saying goes, homesickness may make a stranger.” Qiu Xiuzhi said, “As he is aging, he misses his relative in his hometown, of which I am fully aware. Therefore, I decide to help him in this trip to Hainan”.

Off the bus, Qiu Xiuzhi returned to her room in silence. After changing clothes and preparing a pot of tea, she stood at the balcony outside her room, looking around nervously, which greatly touched those fellow guests and media reporters. “It is only within a day’s time since I asked the local media for help. I can hardly believe that I have succeeded!” said Qiu Xiuzhi. She would meet with five relatives from Wenchang that her husband has never met before, which was just like a dream to her.

When informed that three of her nephews, her niece-in-law and her grandson-in-law had arrived at the hotel, Qiu asked us in excitement, “I don’t know what to do as I have become the focus in the news. Shall I ask them something? Maybe I should wait at the gate…Look, maybe near the stairs as it is much brighter…” With these words, she approached the stairs and saw those five of her younger generation. Hugging together in excitement, this reunited family choked with sobs.

Then they shared their current information with each other. As Fu Chuantao told Ms. Qiu, his aunt, Fu Jiaying, passed away as early as in the 1950s, and so did his father Fu Xiangxiong four years ago. “In his last days, my father still nagged aboutour uncle Fu Zhaoxiang that none of our family had seen. My mother is already 92 years old and she wept a whole day when she learnt that our relative was still searching for us.”Fu Chuantao said in sorrow. Then in great expectation, he made a phone call to Fu Zhaoxiang who was in Taiwan. At the news that his elder sister and brother had gone, Fu Zhaoxiang inquired about the current situation of the remaining family and promised to take his whole family to visit them at Hainan the next year.

The affectionate affinity and inseparable nostalgia of this incident aroused great sympathy among Ms. Qiu Xiuzhi as well as her peers at JCEMAS. “The power of literature is so great that it can transcend time and space to bring those who were separated for decades together again. We owe our gratitude to it for emotional linkage.” Taiwanese writer Ji Ji concluded.

Writing Pair of Couplet for Principal of Li Ethnic Group

Huali Li Ethnic Group Primary School in Sanya City is characterized with calligraphy tradition. Calligraphy is a compulsory lesson for pupils there. On December 11, 60 pupils had the privilege to meet their new “teachers”—over ten calligraphers who participating in the 2016 JCEMAS.

Wang Shanshan, at the age of 12, is a pupil in Grade 6 of this school, and when those calligraphers arrived, she was copying Ouyang Xun’s model in the first row of her classroom. Viewing the fascination of those children of Li ethnic group for Chinese calligraphy, Xie Jiyun, advisor of Chinese Calligraphy Society of Taiwan and honorary president of Taiwan Women Calligraphers Society, couldn’t help lecturing the basic points of calligraphy practice to those children despite her age of 77 years.

“Those 60 pupils are so lucky that they have become the direct participants in the cultural exchange across the Straits.” Huang Rongming, the principal of this school, uttered in excitement. He then asked Ms. Xie to write a pair of couplet with the two following sentences “education within music, chess, calligraphy and painting, feelings for morality, intelligence, sports and aesthetics”. At this unbalanced couplet in rhyme and rhythm, after a short hesitation, Ms. Xie advised some trivial polish without changing the original meaning to the principal because verbal parallelism or antithesis is a must in the traditional Chinese literature for couplets.

The traditional Chinese culture has no difficulty for communications across the Straits. As the principal sighed, for calligraphic improvement, it is also necessary to read plenty of books to lay a solid literary foundation.

200-Meter Calligraphic Scroll“in Rendez-vous with” Su Dongpo

On December 11, adopting the poetry of Su Dongpo, a great writer in Northern Song Dynasty (960-1127), during his period of banishment to Hainan, 15 calligraphers jointly created a 20-meter-long scroll of calligraphy. In varied style of running script, standard script, official script and cursive script, they wrote down dozens of Su Dongpo’s poems, which was witnessed and appreciated by many audiences. Su Dongpo is not only an excellent poet and calligrapher in China’s history, but also a significant figure that has a lot to do with Hainan. In this grand gathering of figures of literature and arts at Hainan, such a joint creation was indeed a “Rendez-vous” with this ancient master across time.

Another event “Spring Festival Couplet” attracted much attention as well. Calligraphers and painters improvised in Spring Festival couplet writing, which, via a perfect combination of Spring Festival couplet tradition and calligraphy, demonstrated the unique charm of excellent traditional Chinese culture. Besides, painters jointly created a painting in a length of 2.4 meters and a width of 1.2 meters. Titled "Neighboring Mountain and Sea with Connection between Continent and Island" and involving such maritime elements as sea, sail, fishing village and plantain, this painting displayed the beautiful scenery of Taiwan Island and highlighted the interdependence of Mainland, Hainan Island and Taiwan Island as well as the fraternal emotions between each other.

Hard Rock Caged by Root of Culture

Nyima Tsering, member of Central Research Institute of History and Culture and painter for the 10th Panchen Lama, said, “JCEMAS is a heart-to-heart communication with the same cultural root. Currently, a political ‘smog’ is hanging over Taiwan, but the artists across the Straits made a joint creation of this beautiful island in expectation to dismiss the ‘smog’ by the power of culture.”

At the age of 72, Nyima Tsering wore a small grey hat. In his words, he always shows respect to JCEMAS and feel delighted at its invitation. “No matter where it is and how busy I am, I will attend it definitely. As I have been to Taiwan on many occasions of holding exhibitions and cultural exchanges, I know that artists across the Straits share a common heritage, that is, excellent traditional Chinese culture, which is undoubtedly in accordance with the demand of Chinese nation.” As he put, the 56 nationalities across the Straits are blessed with the 5000-year-long history of Chinese civilization that all of themhave jointly created. In the form of cultural exchange, JCEMAS is actually a communication between souls where national spirits are highlighted by Chinese culture.

As Nyima Tsering told us, JCEMAS within several days had confirmed his viewpoints. “We have a smooth communication with our counterparts in Taiwan. As the people’s recognition of Chinese nation and the common destiny of Chinese nation across the Straits is the most important, not a single person, by any means, is allowed to split our country. With our creation, writers and artists shall inherit and promote Chinese culture so as to bridge the gap across the Straits and realize the national rejuvenation as a whole.”

As Cai Junzhang, a Taiwanese painter, said, Chinese culture finds the same path of development in the harmonious family across the Straits. With a common origin, source, language and bloodline, the Chinese compatriots across the Straits always share one destiny as well. In the current period of fully-developed economic globalization and increasingly close interactions, community of destiny is already established and never allows any separation. As the 2nd session of JCEMAS in Taiwan aroused considerable local feedback, this event is expected to achieve a new leap in uniting positive energy across the Straits.

“In the forest park of Tropical Paradise at Yalong Bay of Sanya City, there is a wonder “Rock in the Embrace of Tree”. JCEMAS is like a root of culture that can cage any hard rock.” Wellknown writer Aikebaier Mijiti said at the closing of the 3rd JCEMAS on December 14.

JCEMAS Becomes a Brand Event of Cultural Exchange

When Yu Xun met with the participants of JCEMAS, he commented that Hainan and Taiwan have neighboring geographic location, close interpersonal relationship and identical cultural root. In the long-term communications, many exchanges and cooperation in agriculture, trade, culture and minority nationalities have been conducted between Hainan and Taiwan. The holding of JCEMAS in Hainan and Taiwan in turn has established the brand reputation of cultural exchange between the two regions and exerted an extensive influence. As Li Jun, deputy secretary of CPC Hainan Provincial Committee, expressed, Chinese culture is the most common ground for the peoples across the Straits and the exhibited works in JCEMAS have highlighted the distinct common features of “Chinese Expression, Chinese Integrity and Chinese Manner”.

Initiated in 2014 by ASHCE, a non-governmental organization, JCEMAS was then held twice respectively in Hainan and Taiwan. Such celebrities from Mainland, Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan as Wang Meng, Han Shaogong, He Jiaying, Lu Huaizhong, Guo Feng, Ji Ji and Chen Xiandong were invited to the 1st session.“Our union had hardly any finding or reputation soon after its establishment. All our colleagues ran for business in the daytime and talked to artists at night. with such a passion and perseverance for culture as well as some friends’ assistance, 47 celebrities in the four regions were finally invited.” Zhang Songlin introduced.

In 2015, the 2ndJCEMAS was held in Taiwan, and Humanistic Culture and Education Foundation initiated by Master Hsing Yun in Taiwan as well as Want Want China Times Media Group joined the sponsors. Altogether 70 writers and artists across the Straits were invited, including such masters as Jiang Zilong, Zheng Chouyu and Cai Junzhang as well as such old friends as Wang Meng and Guo Feng. Wang Meng once wrote in his essay, “Within the actual geographic distance from the Mainland, we have come to feel Taiwan increasingly closer. In communications, we find each other compatriots, brothers and colleagues. Such a pleasant and harmonious time, all of us feel warm.” Kong Jian, president of Hainan Writers Association composed a poem as follows, “A bottle of liquor ‘Jinmen Sorghum’ of 58% of alcohol has turned the opponents in the past into a family.” As Zheng Chouyu, a Taiwanese poet, put, “cultural exchange gives birth to friendship and by making artists across the Straits bosom friends, JCEMAS has achieved a successful exchange result”.

Compared with the two previous sessions, this session of JCEMAS provided more availability for young and middle-aged writers and artists. The participants from Hainan and Taiwan accounted for over half of the total, which highly strengthens the theme of JCEMAS. As Zhang Songlin introduced, the active participation from all over China has made this session of JCEMAS a grand gathering of the strongest cast of masters. In his opinion, JCEMAS, in full accordance with the voice of heart from writers and artists across the Straits for mutual understanding and friendship, has won their trust and support. JCEMAS has evolved into a brand event of cultural exchange that cultural celebrities across the Straits love and compete to participate in.
