How to Improve the Students’Speaking

With the appliances of the new English textbooks in middle schools, the English teaching is experiencing profound changes. The cultivation of the students oral English ability becomes more and more important and attracts more and more attention. But there are still many adverse factors affecting and blocking the students oral English ability in practical English teaching process. So it is necessary for us to do some research on how to improve the students oral English.

Ⅰ.The importance of oral English teaching

1.1  The requirement of education

With the appliance of the new English textbooks in middle schools, the English teaching is experiencing profound changes. The cultivation of the students oral English ability becomes more and more important and attracts more and more attention.

1.2  The need for international communication and cooperation

Every country must strengthen their communication and cooperation with other counties if they want to get development. So must China. As a language which has the largest group of learners, English works as a bridge in the communication among different countries all over the world. So, it is inevitable to improve the students communicative ability in oral English teaching.

Ⅱ. The problems in oral English teaching

2.1  The examination-oriented education system restricts the students oral English

In China, students must try their best to achieve a bright future by getting high marks in a series of examinations. The teachers also just teach English to help the students to behave well in the examinations. Both the teachers and the students ignore the importance of spoken English.

2.2  The traditional grammar teaching method restricts the students oral English

In quite a long time the traditional grammar teaching method has been the dominant way of English teaching. In classroom, students are asked to substitute one word for another in a sentence structure, or change one structure into another until they learn them by heart. They are told to learn English like this and they make little practical and creative practice.

2.3  The teachers poor level of oral English restricts the students oral English

At present, many of the teachers in middle schools are not so good at oral English. Their pronunciation and intonation are not so accurately, and they can not use English to conduct English teaching freely and smoothly. Their poor quality of oral English restricts the improvement of the students oral English badly.
