This weekend house was built in a forest in Karuizawa.Standing between a promenade on the north side and a brook on the south side, the house allows the residents to enjoy the rich natural environment.Using a simple gabled-roof volume,I designed all various sized rooms, including the living room and the kitchen, with a gabled ceiling.Between the gabled roof and ceiling, there was an open or attic-like space.By inserting a skylight on the top of the roof, the attic provided the rooms below with a soft quality of sunlight and produced a greenhouse-like atmosphere in the shade of the trees. There is also a staircase leading to a lookout deck on top of the roof, and from one room, you can look up at a scene of the sky on the opposite side through a window with a depth of a few meter. The light and landscape that are visible from every room through the ceiling change moment by moment according to the movement of the sun,and each unique experience makes it seem as if the rooms are independent and scattered throughout the forest.Due to the attic space, your attention is drawn upward at a slant when standing in the kitchen.Embedded in the form of this familiar shape is a diagonally expanding awareness.□
