On March 25, 2010, Kate and David Ogg heard the words every parent fears: Their newborn wasnt going to make it. Their twins—a girl and a boy—were born two minutes apart and 14 weeks premature(早产的), weighing just over two pounds each. Doctors had tried to save the boy for 20 minutes but saw no improvement. His heartbeat was nearly gone, and hed stopped breathing. The baby had just moments to live.

“I saw him gasp(喘氣), but the doctor said it was no use,”Kate told the Daily Mail five years later.“I know it sounds stupid, but if he was still gasping, that was a sign of life. I wasnt going to give up easily.”

Still, the Sydney couple knew this was likely goodbye. In an effort to treasure her last minutes with the tiny boy, Kate asked to hold him.

“I wanted to meet him, and for him to know us,”Kate told Today.“Wed resigned ourselves to the fact that we were going to lose him, and we were just trying to make the most of those last, precious moments.”

Kate unwrapped the boy, whom the couple had already named Jamie, from his hospital blanket and ordered David to take his shirt off and join them in bed. The first-time parents wanted their son to be as warm as possible and hoped the skin-to-skin contact would improve his condition. They also talked to him.

“We were trying to attract him to stay,”Kate told the Daily Mail.“We explained his name and that he had a twin that he had to look out for and how hard we had tried to have him.”Then something miraculous happened. Jamie gasped again—and then he started breathing. Finally, he reached for his fathers finger.

Have a runny nose? Fever? Body aches? During flu season, its natural to think youve been hit with the flu, but how do you know its not just a cold? Cold and flu are both illnesses that share some of the same symptoms, but they are caused by different viruses. Its important to know the difference so you can get the right treatment and feel better. Colds are generally milder than the flu, while flu symptoms come on more suddenly and typically are stronger, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

With a cold, youre likely to start with a sore(痛)throat for the first day or two. Youll have a runny nose and then a cough. Its rare for an adult with a cold to have a fever. But a child is more likely to have a fever with a cold. Its also uncommon to have body aches, headache or chills(发冷). Your symptomstypically last for about a week. Theres no cure for the cold. Treat symptoms as necessary with pain or cough medicine. You can also try drinking lots of water and getting plenty of rest.

Flu symptoms usually are more severe and come on more rapidly than cold symptoms. They include fever, chills, cough, sore throat, headache, body aches, 00 sneezing and a runny or stuffy nose. Most symptoms start to improve over the first two to five days and the body weakness can sometimes last for weeks after other symptoms are gone. Youre likely able to infect(感染)other people while having the flu. Flu can sometimes lead to more serious diseases, especially in people who are young, elderly or have other health problems. Consult your doctor if you notice shortness of breath, or a fever that returns after having been gone for a few days. Theres no cure for the flu, but if you see your doctor as soon as symptoms start, she may give you some drugs. If taken early, these drugs may shorten your illness, lessen the symptoms, and help prevent serious illness.

28. Whats the purpose of this passage?

C. To provide cures for two diseases.

D. To distinguish a cold from the flu.

The walls of your family home could be used as a battery soon, storing energy in its blocks. Scientists have developed a new type of concrete that is filled with potassium ions(鉀离子), which allow it to store electricity for long periods of time. When energy production levels drop, the concrete would kick in and power a house using the reserve stock of energy it has saved up.

Renewable energy sources are becoming more important, slowly putting an end to nuclear and coal-powered plants. One of the major barriers holding up the expansion of the industry is the inability to adequately store any spare power that is produced. Batteries work by transferring charged particles from one side to the other—storing energy in a chemical medium that can later be released. The researchers have found that these charged particles, known as ions, can also flow through a crystalline structure— like concrete—accumulating on one side. This physically‘trapsthe energy and does not require the use of chemicals, making the potassium-filled concrete technically a capacitor(电容器), not a battery.

“The idea is to store electricity in the structure itself and release it at times of peak demand,”said Mohamed Saafi, from Lancaster Universitys engineering department, who developed the technology.“We have a lot of buildings. If you could change them into batteries, it would pretty much solve a lot of our energy problems.”

Professor Saafi notes that capacitors hold less energy by volume(容积)than batteries, but there is far more volume available if the new form of concrete is to be widely used as a building material.“We have whole buildings to use, and its cheap,”he added.

The technology is still small-scale and requires more research before it can become commercially possible. A ten-year plan is in place to bring the special concrete to mass-market, and it could be used in buildings as well as street lamps.

32. What do we know about the new form of concrete?

A. It is mass-produced.

B. It saves up charged ions.

C. It has been put into use.

D. It can offer enery to a house.

33. What is the main fator that blocks the expansion of the industry?

A. Widely-used batteries.

B. No enough capacitors.

C. Failure to store spare power.

D. Renewable energy sources.

34. What is the advantage of using the new form of concrete as a building material?

A. Holding much more energy.

B. Making buildings stronger.

C. Storing less energy by volume.

D. Improving the living level.

35. What is the authors attitude toward the future of the special concrete?

A. Curious.B. Optimistic.C. Doubtful.D. Uncaring.

Many people find it hard to focus when they have worked on something for too long. You can be more productive if you step back for a little while from what you are doing.    37    When you go back to your task, youll have fresher eyes and more focused attention.

Quit multitasking

You might think you can get more work done when you multitask, but you are likely to fail one or all of them.    38    Quit multitasking and concentrate on doing one task at a time as well as you can before moving on to the next

39

An important aspect of scheduling is setting a reasonable amount of time to accomplish a task. Your productivity depends on how well you use your time, so manage it wisely. A deadline will keep you determined to work faster and shut out distractions.

40   . Productivity is not about just doing things, but doing things wisely. These tips can help you on the road of productivity and increased satisfaction.
