钱锺书留学未得学位

清华大学档案馆所存钱锺书的教职员登记表。

钱锺书1935年4月24日考取管理中英庚款董事会第三届留英公费生，8月6日乘凯森号轮首途，9月13日抵伦敦，11月5日以试读生（Probationer）身份于牛津大学埃克塞特学院注册，读B. Litt.（Bachelor ofLetters，文学学士）学位。1936年12月4日，获正式生（full student）资格。1937年6月22日，提交论文“China in the English Literature of the Seventeenth and Eighteenth Centuries”。8月27日，举家移居法国巴黎。10月29日，埃克塞特学院董事会开出公文，认证钱锺书可以申领文学学士学位：“This is to certify that Chung- shu Chien of Exeter College has, in conformity with the requirements of the Stat-utes, completed a course of spe-cial study and research under the supervision of the Board of the Faculty, and that his work therein as tested by a thesis and by exami-nation has reached a standard of merit sufficient to entitle him to supplicate for the Degree of Bach-elor ofLetters”（依据章程，埃克塞特学院学生钱锺书，经学院董事会监理，已完成学业及论文，可以申请文学学士学位。特此证明）。详见牛津大学埃克塞特学院院长Frances Cairncross教授和牛津大学莫顿学院陈立博士合作的长篇调查报告“Qian Zhongshu and Oxford University”（载江南大学《从无锡到牛津：钱锺书的人生历程与学术成就研讨会论文集》，2014年3月。参看《文汇报》2015年7月3日杨昊成《钱锺书在牛津大学》的译述——“已经杨绛先生审阅”）。此文结论：“However, he does not appear to have taken the usual next step,of supplicating for the degree.Thus, in theory, no degree was ever conferred upon him.”就是说，钱锺书不曾返回牛津大学申领学位。

未回校申领学位，多半缘自少年负气。钱锺书入学未几即大言（见《书人》1937年1月号通信栏）：“牛津顽固陈旧，有名无实，环境远不如清华。生平不肯以耳为目、大言动人，不比其他留学生以到此为三生有幸也。”又出以韵语（《赁庑卧病裁诗排闷》其三，《国风半月刊》1935年11月号）：“拾骨腐生学，闭心上士居。声犹闻蟪蛄，技只注虫鱼。地自嚣尘甚，人多尸气余。珷玞差可识，怀璧罪从渠。”“拾骨”是冯班的妙喻（《槐聚日札》第二百九则：“《三百五篇》既是仲尼所定，不应掇其所弃。昔尝与程孟阳言诗，譬之犬之拾骨，非徒戏言也”）。……
