ARestudyof“Be”asaVerbinWesternPhilosophy
NIE Min-li

This is a restudy of “Be” as a verb in Western philosophy because its understanding is not simply a translation problem but also a philosophical problem to either Chinese thinking or Western thinking. The paper introduces the ideas of Parmenides, who is the first philosopher to bring up this basic philosophical problem, and then gives a textual analysis of the related studies by other philosophers like Kierkegaard and Schofield with the conclusion that Parmenides uses it both as “to be” and “existence”. The paper also discusses the relevant ideas of Plato and Aristotle and concludes that it is not based on a philosopher’s understanding but relies on the special relations between language and reality as well as between thinking and object. ““Be” as a verb in Western philosophy refers both to a logical relationship between language and thinking and a signification of the definite existence of an object. Thus, ““Be” as a verb in Western philosophy has the meaning of both “to be” and “existence” and any interpretation of its philosophical implications from one angle is no good.

IsThere“Existence”intheStructureofQuestioning?AStudyofBeingandTimebyHeidegger
WANG Lu

Before discussing “Sein”, Heidegger explores the structure of questioning and obtains three key structural elements. With a comparison of the general structure of questioning and that of “Sein”, he points out that the former is related to the comprehension of “Sein” while the latter is about the questioning of “Sein” and its comprehension, which is quite special. His exploration of the structure of questioning concludes that in both cases “Sein” refers to “to be” rather than “existence”.

ItisImpossibletoTranslate“Being”inAllCasesintotheChineseWord“shi”:CommentaryonProfessorWangLu’sHowtoUnderstandWesternPhilosophy
WANG Xiao-chao

This is a commentary on Professor Wang Lu’sHowtoUnderstandWesternPhilosophy. In this book, Professor Wang Lu follows his usual approach to “shi” though with some textual analysis he shifts his analysis from the general theoretic discussion to the understanding of words, sentences and paragraphs in the concrete contexts. With this, he proposes his understanding of the whole of Western philosophy. The author of this paper concludes that Professor Wang Lu fails to realize his goal because it is impossible to translate “Being” in all cases into the Chinese word “shi”:

AStudyof“Being”
SONG Ji-jie

This research focuses on “Being” from two aspects as follows: First, how do Westerners understand “Being”? Second, how have Chinese scholars translated “Being?” It holds that the philosophy of metaphysics in the West has evolved around the several basic meanings of “Being” and some related philosophies. If considered separately, “Being” can be translated either from ancient Greek to modern Western languages or from Western languages to Chinese. If considered integratedly, “Being” can not be faithfully translated because the Chinese link verb “shi” has a much weaker function than “to be” in Western languages that is related to “existence” in ontology, “reality” in epistemology and “truth” in logics with a further metaphysic thinking of ultimate and unification.

In the literature about the 3-year mourning period by Confucian scholars of the pre-Qin dynasty, there are mainly three interpretations of “showing family loyalty to the late parents and respect for the senior”. These history books have different focuses and implications about this phenomenon and our understanding of their interpretations should take the historical context into consideration.

Since the early 20thcentury and under the influence of the disciplinary paradigms of economic history, philosophical history and ideological history, Chinese scholars have produced both similar and different theories on the process and causes of the cultural transformation of the thoughts of the Tang and the Song dynasties. CAO Chun-ru

Wei Yingwu, a famous poet of the Tang dynasty, is good at learning from others and especially from the great poet Tao Yuanming and successfully creates the poetic style of Wei-Suzhou. His poems show a good balance between his concern for the country and love of nature with a Buddhist orientation. After the introduction of his poems to Korea, they became popular with both the Korean Government and the men of letters. The Korean poets appreciated his qualities either as an official or as a poet and commented on his poems from different perspectives. Quite a few Korean poets learned from him in various ways. Their acceptance of him and his poems is an important part of Wei Yingwu studies and mirrors the successful literary exchanges between China and Korea.

TheSilent“TenthMuse”:ImageofMuseinMonnaInnominatabyChristinaGeorginaRossetti
XU Sha

MonnaInnominatais a group of sonnets by Christina Georgina Rossetti who was a well-known poetess in the Victorian Age. Different from the traditional one, the new Muse in these sonnets is a silent and passive goddess worshiped by male poets. This Muse plays the dual role of a poet and Muse, and enjoys an equal position in terms of poetic creation as his lover with her own power of discourse. Christina Georgina Rossetti creates this new Muse with some inheritance from the previous images of Muse and mirrors her desire of becoming “the tenth Muse”. However, like other poetesses in the 19th century, Christina Georgina Rossetti has gradually disappeared in terms of poetic reputation, especially in the 20th century when New Criticism was gaining in momentum. Nevertheless, it is still worthwhile to appreciate her poems in the 21st century.

His choice of allusions reveals his poetic creation as a nobleman, and his use of classical allusions mirrors his understanding of the reality, which reflects the creative concept of “image representing meaning” embodied inTheBookofChanges
